I have some clunking noises comming from the front end when I turn left or right. I crawled under the front end and it didn't take long to spot the upper and lower ball joints on both sides are in bad shape. I figure I will go ahead and take care of everything at once while I have it tore down. From what I can tell so far, I can replace the lower ball joints but I have to replace the complete upper control arm. I plan to put new shocks in too. (I was looking at the Bilsteins). I read somwhere that I may need to replace the springs as well.

Has anyone else had to go thru a front end suspension rebuild? Does anyone have some pointers/suggestions on what all needs to be done, maybe an itemized list of the things to do and recommended parts? My Libby is stock as far as the suspension is concerned and I plan to keep it that way. (No lift kit, etc.)

not a hard job but takes time.. if you want to keep everything stock you have to go buy new stuff from the dealer.. personally id get jeepin by al upper arms (they have bolt in ball joints).. have napa swap your shocks out in the strut (these springs are tight).. depending on the mileage your will probably need new springs too..

Suggest you have a reputable guy do it.
Moog ball joints, Jeepin by Al upper arms and keep your receipts.
What a pia in my opinion. Have it aligned too.

I just did my lower ball joints, struts, and bearings, and front outer axle seals/bearings. You'll need a press for springs/struts and other speciality tools 4x4 ball joint and bearing tools. A bit more challenging than the Jetta TDI. Jeff

Can you explain more why you would have a shop do it? How difficult is doing this stuff? Similar to replacing motor mounts?
