All problems are fixable! Have you had it to a good transmission shop for a diagnosis? These transmissions are used in a wide varieties of vehicles and transmission shops are well versed in their problems and / or repairs...
Dealers are generally clueless about these vehicles! Throwing engine parts at a transmission problem, i.e. EGR valve, glow plugs, etc... would be a prime example.

Describe your problem(s) in detail here and hopefully some will advise best course of action...

I have not pulled the trigger on it yet......... Once I do and have had a chance to all the fixes in the Noob stickie I will tell you how it is and ask for advice then. I just wondered if these issues would scare you guys away.

Randy, it is very rare indeed to find a perfect used Jeep Liberty CRD!
Most all of them once purchased will need some upgrades and some PM's tasks that were probably not done by the previous owner(s).
Along with some TLC by the new owner....to make it a viable vehicle.

There is a list of suggested upgrades and mods on this forum! I will try and find and post for you.

So I bought the Liberty CRD..... It is about 100 miles away and was parked about 6 months ago in limp mode. The battery has been charged so it will probably at least crank. Will it have reset itself to normal mode or still be in limp mode? Would you suggest drive it home or haul/tow it? There is probably an Advance auto close that I could use their scan tool to reset something?

Would you advise I take some tools and maybe clean the sensors? MAF, map, anything else easy? Or just get it home?

NO to driving it home, you're at a critical point of determining if the problem with the CRD could cause a catastrophic failure.

Need to find out what the problem is first.

I would advise to tow it home and work on it little by little.

All excellent advice by racetracer, I totally concur!
Trailer or tow it home! There are things that need to be done, checked, and confirmed before driving it.
Don't take an expensive chance when you can avoid it!!!!!

Will do. Probably next week sometime.

Ill let you know what I find.

Im kind of excited to start but then afraid the problem will be larger than I think and cost much money and time.

We shall see.

Thanks again for your help.

So I asked the owner more questions about the CRD after some reading on here. The problem may be simpler than it appeared. The owners Dad took off the electric fan in front of the radiator. It was apparently not working at all................. Then the limp mode began occurring when the ac was run............. So it could very well be that a new fan will solve the problem.....

Why the dealer did not realize the fan was missing or not operating I have no clue..........

I hope to get it home this week.

I just wonder now if it would be ok to drive home as long as the AC was not turned on.... But I probably wont chance it.

I doubt that a malfunctioning or none existent fan caused the limp home mode unless the engine was severely overheating.

Post subject:  Re: 05 crd limp mode problem! please help!

So I hauled the liberty home yesterday. It shows a check engine light but ran good at first.
Drove it around some but not at highway speeds.

After some running the Electronic Throttle Control warning light started flashing and definitely ran started running at a degraded level.

Though maybe unrelated the radio also shut off. No display at all. Possibly a fuse but I didn't have a chance to look.

The Electric Fan is missing and was removed because it had locked up.

The previous owner said it went in Limp Mode when it was warm out with the AC on. Which was after the fan had been removed.

I don't know if what the previous owner assumed was a transmission limp mode was really the ETC warning light.........

Is there a transmission limp mode indicator??

Thanks,
Randy

Can you post the actual codes?

If the vehicle sat for a while then some of the sensors foul up and seize and need replacing and that goes for the electric fan.

Do you have the old electric fan? A bit of silicone spray sprayed around the motor will free it back to working normally.

The flow control valve maybe so fouled up and gummed up with exhaust fouling that its movement is being hampered causing the limp home mode.

You will need to remove it, inspect it and clean it.

I tried the key on/off three times but it will not display codes. Does that not work on these? If not I will have to get a code reader.

Where is the flow control valve you speak of? What do you clean it with?

I was going to just order a new fan. I have never had much luck in the long run freeing stuff up like that. And this has been off and sitting so long its hard to tell.

To get the fan assembly back on do I have to take the grill and such off?

Reckard,

Have you read the noob guide?

Have you downloaded the manuals?

I am concerned that you may have more on your hands than you can deal with, your questions give you away.

To own a CRD you would need a mechanical set of beginners tools (approx. $250.00 worth) and also to be mechanically capable to change an alternator, replace a fan belt and or the timing belt, for instance, otherwise you will need thousands of dollars to pay someone else to do the work.

Not trying to scare you but this is what it is needed to own a CRD. Not many mechanics know how to work on these.

Reckard - a really basic first question. Where are you located? Helpful members may be nearby but absent location in your signature who knows.

I am close to Romney WV.

I have read the noob guide and have a list of things to do now that I have gone thru it.

Unplug the MAF, FCV, Clean the MAP. Get a new electric fan mounted.

Change oils, filters. In fact all were ordered from Rockauto this morning.

Is there any reason the radio would quit when the ETC light came on? I cannot imagine the relation but....... Will check the fuses tonight. Work just gets in the way.. :o

I actually have a Jetta TDI, a cummins, several tractors and have worked on all for many years. I just am not familiar with the CRD terms an quirks but will try anything.

I have done enough to know asking the right people is the key to success.

Thanks for all the help.
