Hi guys. My car has failed its MOT test due to the parking brakes not working. Turns out the backing plate is falling to bits and does not hold the shoes on properly. I can’t seem to find a pair of plates anywhere for less than £300 which is extortionate. Anyone know of any alternatives? Many thanks.

Hello, Jtroc1975:

Unfortunately, this is one of those vehicle-specific parts the parts manufacturers KNOW they can take advantage of customers on. The part is designed to fail over time, and typically the ONLY place to get a replacement is from the vehicle's dealer. They WILL charge outrageous money for their parts because they know you have no alternative because jobber parts typically do not exist.

In this case dealers will typically sell you an entire replacement kit including all of the hardware that you likely do not need along with the dust shield, and then charge hundreds of dollars for it.

The rear brake dust shields can rust/rot out on several types of vehicles because the design of rear disc brake used in these vehicles, (the KJ Jeep Liberty among them), allows them to make the dust shields thin and flimsy. Unlike most drum brakes where the torque reaction from braking is resisted by the dust shield, (necessitating a heavy, thick plate and therefore will take many, many years to rust out), the torque from braking on these rear disk brakes with the drum parking brake inside is resisted by a cast iron arm bolted to the end of the axle and poking through the dust shield. The dust shield is then made thin, even parking brake drum hardware parts are still bolted to it. When the dust shield starts to rot out, the parts become misaligned and will cause the parking brake to bind on and not release, or they will not apply at all.

And now when jobber parts manufacturers, (like Dorman), do manage to make dealership-specific parts, they will also charge a lot of money, although typically less than what the dealerships charge. The high cost for these parts is usually because of the low production numbers for these parts because they are vehicle specific. These jobber parts can actually be better than the O.E. parts because they can be made more durable and have design changes to make them easier to install. This is the case with the rear brake dust shield offered by Dorman for the KJ Liberty/Cherokee series...

Here is the video they provide to assist in installation. The video is among the images on the page that opens up when you use the following link...
