Any update on this issue? I have the exact same problem and can't figure it out. I have 360 000kms on this jeep and know this whistling noise is a lot different then normal turbo noise. It is driving me nuts! Funny I cleaned my MAP also just before the noise started. Haven replaced the turbo modulator (blue one) the air intake hose and have cleaned everthing

This might help I had same problem cleaned MAP sensor now turbo noise below 2000rpm. Below 2000 rpm turbo veins are closed by the vacuum to give maximum boost at low rpm. The noise is probably the turbo bearing going bad and its a warning to replace your turbo or rebuild it. You just can not hear the noise above that rpm. Try disconnecting the vacuum tube on the turbo actuator with the engine running and see if the noise decreases (turbine will slow down). A whistling noise could be a leaking hose or intercooler. Screeching noise sounds more like a bearing problem.

Sounds like an air leak of some kind, when vacuum hose is taken off the banshee noise disappears. Gotta be a leak or gasket No CEL

Mix water and washing liquid and spay all around the intercooler and hoses, If the bubbles get bigger you found the leak. Unfortunately this was not the case for me, ordered new turbo today Bank balance now 0

I have a feeling that it could be the turbo also. Did you get a good deal?

I took a look at the cheap Chinese turbos on ebay. I have read good and bad things about them but I intend on keeping this jeep for a long time and opted for a re-furbished garrett turbo (original) £500 plus gaskets. $750+-

I found from another thread about new compressor wheel. They sell wheel only or an assembled center section. Looks god of you can import to your side of the pond.

You need the fully assembled and balanced center section. Just replacing a wheel will not be successful. The balancing is CRITICAL on any turbo, but for these smaller units that spin so fast, it is even more than that.

Howdy All,
I have the same squealing under boost noise on my 2005 CRD.
Has anyone found the source of the noise yet?

Thank you in advance

Since posting here earlier I have looked into it a bit more? Before writing off the turbo check the oil line for any restriction and if you can oil pressure. These little turbo's need good oil pressure to keep the bearing floating in oil. But if the bearing is worn no amount of oil pressure will help and it may starve the motor from oil.

lacabrera, thank you for the insight.
I will check the oil supply line.
Any ideas about why the whistling only occurs at certain rpm/ load and is more severe at cool engine temps?

Thank you

A whistling sound is more likely to be an air leak. Hoses, intercooler or even a EGR valve that's letting by. More boost pressure under load?
Normally the oil seal will start leaking before the bearing disintegrates. I have Been told buy a company that reconditions these turbo's that some oil will pass through the seal to the air intake?? even on a good turbo, How much oil is normal I have no idea. The guy said holding your hand over the turbo a small mist of oil is normal?? His words not mine

I think a bit of oil is normal, but as you said, a mist. Not more than that.

Howdy Lost Jeepers,
I'm not sure if anyone having this issue has actually found the source. I have actually located and fixed the source of my whistling.
The severity of my whistling seemed related to engine temp and load. It became less severe as the engine warmed up. I began looking for a leaking manifold gasket or cracked manifold. Fortunately for me it was a leaking manifold gasket at cylinder 3 and 4 exhaust ports. The nuts were a nightmare to access and torque to spec. However for the first time since April, my CRD no longer makes an embarrassing squeal.
I hope this info helps someone else that is experiencing this issue.

Thanks for the update, Mine was a turbo problem? but i have been reading more and more about the exhaust manifold cracking and causing problems. seems to be a common problem.

I've unplugged the hose of the vacuum line from the turbo and the noise go away , now I know I have a air pressure leak , I hope is not the Intercooler , I don't know how to repair it

Any leak can be fixed with JB weld! I checked the intercooler leak by covering one end with hand while blowing the other with mouth. If you feel pressure built up in your mouth then there is no leak! If you want to check for small leak then cover the intercooler with soapy water before blowing and have some one watch for bubble while you blow.
