has anyone ever actually install a turbo timer in 1 of these in it which worked
? I'm a bit nervous to install the timer because I don't know if I will screw up the compute

hello all, I've done a quick search regarding turbo timers but came up with very little specifically on the topic. the owners manual talks about the issues which the computer will have if the key is not in the ignition whilst the engine is running. given this is the principle of a turbo timer I wonder if anyone has installed a turbo timer and being able to avoid problem. my saturday project is to install a turbo timer which I recently purchased and I want to know if there is anything for which I should be watching or if there are any traps for young players. thanks in anticipation. cheers, chamba |

My simple solution, not needed around home as the route to my house forces a 5 min low speed drive, for on the road is to just carry a spare chipped ignition key so I can lock the car while running if I need to duck into a minute market or some such. |

why not install a temp gauge the measure the temps.. then you'll now when its safe to turn off the engine. I have a gauge on my diesel truck..most times its not an issue unless towing a trailer think you have a problem..wait 30 sec..after stopping or measure it. -dkenny |

I wish I had more info on it, but it is just a really generic looking device I bought off a former member here. It has no manufacturer's markings on it, it just says TURBO TIMER. It had a simple 4 wire hookup and a switch for 1, 3, or 5 minutes run time. Maybe the lack of a key is not a problem once the engine is running, only when cranking. |

If you live in a residential area where you have to meander to your parking spot, your turbo will be cooled down. If you live on the top of a hill or mountain and your parking spot is right off the road, or you do some heavy towing and need to make a run into the rest area to answer nature, a turbo timer may be a good idea if you don't want to watch and wait for the EGT to cool down. The EGT gauge is a good idea either way that will tell you the truth so you don't cook your turbo. The 0W-40 Synthetic oil is crap, thins out to fast and can screw up your turbo bearings. 5W-40 Synthetic is the thinnest that will let your turbo live. A 10W-40 Synthetic that is zinc rich or with a zinc additive will let your turbo bearing last much longer. I have used 10W-40 Amzoil zinc rich AMO from -15F to 105F with no problems. With my centrifuge and Amzoil filter, I changed it out at 15K, but I could have gone longer. Since our CRDs do not have any type of cataylist that is effected by zinc, zinc is not an issue. Also Zinc rich oils help the cams and followers last much longer. |

thanks guys this is very helpful. specifically, the reason I'm after a turbo timer is because this is the car that my wife drives 95 percent of them time. as you can imagine getting my wife to pay attention to the e g t before shutting off engine would be like hurding cats. sounds like I should be able to install the timer I've got as the keys only required to start the engine. that's good news. I'll post here when I do it next weekend and let you guys know. thank you again for the input. |

It do you recall which colored wires you attached had a simple 4 wire hookup and a switch for 1, 3, or 5 minutes run time. Maybe the lack of a key is not a problem once the engine is running, only when cranking. do you recall which wires you attach the turbo timer to? I don't have a wiring diagram yet but I pulled the plastic covers off of the steering column and located the half dozen or so wires coming from the ignition cluster. did you hook it up to the wires that come out of the column or further down in the dashboard? thanks in anticipation. |

Here is what I got from the guy I bought it from. There is also a pdf I can email you if you want. "The Timer itself has 3 wires: 1. RED: Connect to fused 12V + source (not a keyed source, but an always live source) capable of supporting at least 10 amps (Cigarette lighter feed, for example). 2. BLACK: Connect to Ground 3. BLUE: Connect to BOTH the Pink/light green and Pink/yellow wires found in the wiring harness. If you flip down the knee panel in the Liberty, you will see where the wires come down from the steering column. Pull a little slack in those 2 pink wires, and tap into them." There was an added wrinkle that I found after summer came. When it was hot enough, and the jeep was on timer, the AC would come on! Regardless of the climate control settings! The ECU would turn on the AC clutch automatically. So I found the wire for the AC clutch in the fuse box and instead tapped it into a source that was not hot when the key was off. That fixed the stupid problem. I like my EGT at shutoff to be less than 300F. If you pull into the garage and turn off your AC it can be 400 - even with easy driving. Usually a minute is enough to get it below 300. |

Hi All - and David, I installed the timer this weekend. Thank you very much for the help. I think I may have sussed out the a/c problem too. There are two PK/YL wires - a Run/Acc and a Run. If one hooks it up to the Run/Acc then there MAY be feedback to the a/c. By hooking to the Run only (2nd PK/YL wire down from the 'top' of the plug), mine only runs the engine - radio, etc. are all off and the air con has not come on either. Hope that helps. Chamba |
