I just bought an 05 CRD, and it has 140K+ (not sure how much, odo is not reliable) miles, so I'm getting a suncoast converter, putting in a timing belt, new water pump, and am seriously considering putting in a head gasket and studs just to stave off trouble in the future.

But I'm having difficulty finding a head gasket kit.

No local dealer, either.

Any suggestions?

Also, I've found quite a bit of discussion on the stud kit, but as of yet, don't know if the bugs have been worked out of that yet. As in, is there a kit, or do adaptations have to made?

I'm in kind of a rush on this... as I'm moving across the country in 4 weeks and need all this done before I move 2000 miles towing.

Well so basicly your doing what I did just to make this italian more reliable....I had a coolant leak added dye couldn't find it. So I know it was the HG so what I did was...
1) New Head Gasket from http://www.greendieselengineering.com/store/Welcome.do

2) ARP Studs you will need two of these kits..(you will be left with 2 extra studs) http://www.wcpdiesel.com/engine-drivetrain/head-studs/arp-204-4706-8740-material-head-studs-vw-audi-1-6l-1-9l-turbo-non-turbo-82-02.html

3) Since you're going right by the rockers you might as well just do them while you're there (like i did that way they're done) http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=29_125&products_id=3065

4) And you can either get a new OEM thermostat http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=29_109&products_id=2719
or you can get the Slant inline thermostat 13519 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C809CE/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

5) you need to get new exhaust manifold gasket/ new nuts, intake manifold gasket (valve cover), the 3 intake elbow gaskets, and order 2 sets of injectors seals and washers...which you can either get from GDE or IDparts

6) Glow plugs either the ones from IDparts or http://www.dieselglowplug.com/gx3123-diesel-glow-plug-jeep-cherokee-liberty-p-2032.html?osCsid=44qjd9f8dbs5csqghdfmov5d87&currency=USD

7) and the HIGHLY RECOMENDED GDE Tune to increase the life of the engine

8) optional replace the fan clutch with Hayden

I'm in eastern Oregon, but am moving to Illinois...

I've read many of the threads here. I have been reading for about 3 weeks off and on, registered a week ago, but haven't posted till now, since now I have one.

I seem to have a bad BCM (body control module), as it misbehaves, won't talk to a OBD2 reader, and fails at various things... including A/C not coming on, and other oddities including various indicator lights coming on and going off somewhat randomly.

I bought one already, should be here tomorrow. Anything I should know about swapping it in?

Never experienced that issue myself but form my understanding of how they work it should be just a direct swap. I think your the first liberty i have heard of with this issue except the one struck by lighting a few years ago.

Well, I put it in and nothing changed.

I'll get to check if we get communication in a couple days.

I think I have a head gasket leak, as well, since the water is slowly going away and I can't find an external leak.

Since it's getting a timing belt and water pump, that's the perfect time for studs instead of tty bolts.

I hope to be able to check airflow when I get back to it and see if I can read the engine controller.

While a head gasket leak is possible don't assume that's the cause without doing a UV dye test of your cooling system (add UV dye, drive for a few days, look for leaks with UV light). I've personally experienced, not CRD though, coolant leaks that were essentially invisible absent the dye because the coolant that was leaking immediately evaporated.

WRT wierd computer stuff:

A bad battery connection or a bad battery can do the same thing. Get some vaseline, clean the posts and clamps, lube with a little vaseline, retighten and see if that helps. You may also have to check and clean the various chassis to engine ground connections. My Volvo TD had charging system problems that were traced to grounding issues.

Excellent advice. If you do diagnose a HG problem, and decide on studs, there is a thread on that, or you can drop me a line.

BTW, anybody that has those two extras that wants to sell them, drop me a line I am interested.

Lengthy inline tstat discussion with links to other discussions is at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=63587

The "housing" mentioned is at http://www.amazon.com/Meziere-WN0072-In ... 131&sr=1-2 if you want a housing.
