I have had an '05 Liberty CRD for about 4 years now and I always questioned the downshifting from OD when climbing a grade but have never asked if this was normal. Here is the scenario: When cruising at highway speeds in OD and I come to a grade where the transmission has to downshift, it seems to drop 2 gear ranges then almost immediately upshift one gear range. It has done this ever since we got the CRD even before and after the GDE transmission tune. For other reasons, I replaced the torque converter and front pump but the downsiift from OD is the same. The transmission shifts fine from a start all the way through to 5th but again, when climbing a grade and needs to downshift, it seems to downshift to 3rd then almost immediately to 4th then after the grade is climbed back to OD. Is this normal for the 545RFE? |

Yes, this is normal. The "downshift" is it kicking out of overdrive. (The top two gears are overdrive in this app.) If you are over the mid-50 MPH range, it will go straight to 5th when it upshifts again, after you let off, just as you described. The exception is with the GDE "tow tune". With that, if you are over 55 and under 70, it will upshift to 4rth. DOC |

Upgrade to the ECO Full torque tune and you'll eliminate a lot of the down shifting. While towing our 3500# camper I can hold 4th in a narrow MPH range with my F37 tcm and full torque tune. |

Last year with the same tuning, same mod, same camping trailer as Joe we get the same MPG Now with my lift kit, Moab wheels , big tires, tranny mod and my new heavy Equal-i-zer sway control hitch the result may piss me... To continue... |
