Bearhunter,

Did you reach a conclusion on your starter issues? I am having the same problem. The battery seems like it is the common cause. But when I load test it, it checks out fine. The Advance guys test is and they say its bad?

Sears P-1 solves a lot of starter problems, it has lots more cranking power.
Quit using the Optima Red Tops, I got tired of them going dead in the Airport Parking Garage when I am gone for the week in the winter.

Hello warp2diesel,

I am 95,000 miles on my original optima battery.
When I load test it with my tester is reads fine. When I take it to the Advance Auto store it says replace.
Every-time I use my boost-box the car fires up fine. It does look like the evidence is pointing to a battery. What is very confusing is that the car may start up with no problems for 5-8 times and then start "clicking" again...

Thanks,

Tom

Is your "tester" a multimeter? I believe, a true, battery tester puts a load on the battery and measures the voltage/current emulating what is needed to engage the starter and provide cold cranking amps (CCA). So, Advance Auto's test and your starting behavior may indeed point to the battery.

Sorry, I didn't see "When I load test it with my tester..." Maybe it could be it can't hold a charge?

Intermittent short between battery cells will cause an intermittent no power/start condition and the battery will sometimes test good even under load (been there but not on the CRD)

Guys,

I went to O'Reily's and they checked. Their tester read bad so I put a new battery in and that solved the problem. The engine spins over notably faster too.
My old tester is basically a switch with a gauge and a series of springs. My gauge never showed much of a drop, it stayed in the green. Oh well.

Thank you all for the replies!

Tom
