U-joints are commonly available. In the US a high quality one cost about US$20 to $25 each, Chinese made, about US$12. U-joints are defined by their 2 dimensions. 1. The overall assembled length from one cap end to the end of the opposite cap. 2. The cap diameter. You can get these 2 measurements without removing the joint, but the places where the clips that hold the caps in, must be clean. You'll need a machinists caliper to measure the diameter of the hole (determines the cap diameter) and a couple of short sockets to place one in each hole, on top of the caps (circle clips removed). Measure that overall length, U-joint + sockets, and subtract the combined length of the 2 sockets to give you the length of the U-joint. Or press the joints out, take them to a bearing shop or auto parts house, and let them measure them for proper sizing. The joints are easily pressed out with a vice, and some short pieces of pipe or sockets. Take the "clips" out of the ends of the yokes, clean thoroughly, grease the holes and use your sockets to press them out with the vice. |

Hey, I actually just did my u joints yesterday. I went to NAPA to get them and they had them in stock for about 20$ a piece, but warning they do not fit. the caps are the right size and so but the middle is to big. So in a hurry to get my vehicle up i called the dealer and they had them in stock. but they wanted 65$ or so a piece and they arnt even greasable. so just some good information. Also check your front axle seals. my passenger side was shot and leaking bad. |
