So, going off of the lists here earlier, to do the timing belt and water pump, I just went ahead and bought everything-to include tools, to do it...ouch. (on the tools part, really) I had thought I'd be good at around $650.00 total, but I forgot about the TB tensioner tool and cam gear locking tool. I'm sure I probably could have figured something out, but I'd rather just have the tools so the next time I have to do this, I have them already-so I'm considering it an investment. Here's what I got, and the prices of them...I'll only post the price difference if it was different from the Timing Belt Parts thread...
Timing belt
Tensioner pully
Idler pully
Timing cover gasket $.16.27
Water pump
water pump O ring (I know a couple of guys said they got it with their pump, but I'd rather be safe than sorry...) $8.63

tools-
intake camshaft alignment pin
exhaust camshaft alignment pin
cam gear locking tool $244.00 (from millerspecialtools.spx.com)
TB tensioner tool $50.22

My grand total came out to be $1054.71...owwwww....

However, I figure, if I ever need to do this again, all I'll need to buy is the belt and water pump at around $400.00, and Ill have everything else I need to do it with already-at least I'm trying to tell myself that to justify the grand.

I had a few dry bearings (a little 'catchy' too) on the serpentine idlers - so I picked some up at NAPA.

Also, same story with the bearing on the fan mount (the big cast iron thing holding the fan). I replaced the mount, but it appears that the bearing itself can be removed by backing out a set screw (allen) - so if you have a bearing supply near by that would be worth checking.

We, rixram and I, did the Sir Sam Level II tb replacement. with doc4444 and rixracer in attendance, geordi on the phone.

I had the camshaft and flywheel miller tools, doc had the tb tensioner miller 9660.

locking all 3 cam and flywheel is a pain
getting the tb tension right is a witch, rixram nailed it on both

I can wait to do the water pump

rixram needed to replace the serp tensioner and the alt decoupler, I did not need to do it

we both did not put our fans back in, no issues.

rixram had replaced his airbox, egr turbo hose, mine was fine.
our turbo hoses were fine also

Just started the timing belt today...I'm at the point where we're about to put the timing belt back on. Luckily for me, there's 3 of us, so it's been going pretty smoothly. We were unable to get the socket to hold, when trying to break the fan loose from the mount, so instead of doing that, we just unbolted it as a whole assembly, and took it off. It worked a lot better for us, and saved a huge headache.
Unfortunantly, Miller Tools were out of the cam gear locking tool, which I didn't realize since their website never said it...so I ordered a cheaper (not by much-still $150) "universal" dual cam gear tool. It works-barely. I really don't like it, and if I had to do this again, I'd get the actual miller tool to do it. We'll see if I jumped timing on this or not, but hopefully not. Once I get the belt back on, we'll start it up, and let it run for a few seconds with the cover off, and take a look at everything, and see if its all working.

I highly recommend 'renting' the GDE tool - it's very inexpensive as they refund most of the deposit once its returned. (A *great* service, thanks GDE!) That's how I got mine for the job.

Anyhow, even with the tool that barely works...

If you use the proper miller pins for the 90-ATDC flywheel alignment hole and the two for the cam you can confirm that it is precisely aligned. There have been enough failures when using only some, or when using hand-made/alternative alignment pins that I'd almost say that if you can't get them all don't do the job.

That said, when you do use the right pins, you can be quite sure it's correct. I'd check it, spin the engine, check it, spin the engine. I probably over did it but by the time I was done I was pretty sure everything lined up exactly.

Also, note that there is a slight difference in the picture showing proper alignment of the timing belt tensioner. If you look at the GDE picture and the one in the factory service manual they're not the same. I doesn't appear to matter that I can tell from everyone's account of the results - just saying that getting the tension right may be a factor as the belt stretches over time. I noticed that having turned the engine through a few revolutions after the timing belt was first re-installed, it did loosen a little so I made sure to fine tune the tension after that - and before starting.

Be exacting and double-check everything, and you should be fine.

Good luck!

Mark

Cams, crank, injection pump line up after 6 full crank rotations

My miller exhaust cam lock fit perfectly, the intake did not . After much debate we went with it.

Tensioner tool was invaluable it is sel tensioning

Take the time before you light it to manually turn it several times . The belt needs to be tensioned correctly everywhere .

SAMs guide has the best write up of this

We got everything in, buttoned back up, and tightened down. We did have to take the belt off a couple of times, to get all of my timing marks lined up, but its together, tight, and running like a champ. When I pulled the pulleys, tensioner, and belt, it almost looked like someone had been in it previously, adn replaced them, as none of them looked very worn, but at least I have peace of mind, and I can use them as an emergency spare, if I need to.

Congratulations, I did it with others on this board, it runs better now than it had for sometime.

Now in about 80k I'll have to do it again and the waterpump, probably the turbo too.
