All,

My head gasket blew and my engine ate itself. I'm considering selling the head, what is it worth? The injectors were good before the loss. I've taken the viscous heater, the fuel rail and the cp3 for my new/used engine.

Thanks!

It would need to be checked for warping by a calibrated shop, especially if the engine overheated. Where are you located / how did this get diagnosed? I hope you aren't trusting a dealership to tell you what is wrong, they rarely get the day of the week correct.

IF the head itself checks out OK, it (plus the valves) could be worth between 700 and 1200.

Having repaired many aluminum head engines including diesels, if the tops of the cylinder walls are stained deep blue, brown, or black indicating the cylinders walls were over heated. You can count on the rings being annealed and ruined. Also the head is at least warped and may be cracked.
If the tops of the cylinder walls look shiny with hone marks in tact, the head may be worth a trip to the machine shop for pressure testing and checking to see if it is warped. Often the head can be bolted to a large plate and baked in an oven to straighten it if it is warped a few thousandths of an inch. But, if a machine shop that does cylinder head repair will not guarantee their work on that head, you would be best selling the cam shafts along with the other goodies and scrapping the head.
Anyone who sells a scrap head as good using PayPal can expect PayPal to go after them.
If I were to buy a used cylinder head with out a machine shop that does cylinder head repair checking it first, I would only pay slightly more than the scrap price.

A brand new assembled head is approx. 800 - 1200 with an 8 week lead time.

Upon further review (I tore the engine down myself), it appears the #3 glow plug (ceramic of course) broke, fell into the cylinder, then managed to break a valve which tore the piston and cylinder walls to crap. There is little to no discoloration in the other cylinders or elsewhere in the head, which suggests heat was not a problem. The rockers for 3 are badly damaged, the others don't look bad, although to be honest I didn't look that closely. Cams look good.

I am currently in procession of this head and can say the only damage was to one cylinder and its valves. It is currently at my cylinder head rebuilder being fixed with new valves and a simple resurfacing on that cylinder. But the piston and sleeve in that cylinder are shot the connecting rod is perfectly fine.
