3/8" Vacuum Line dragging on ground?

Post subject:  3/8" Vacuum Line dragging on ground?
At a fuel stop, my wife had a trucker point out that she had a hose dragging on the ground and kindly offered to help. I checked it out when I got home.

What appears to be black, 3/8" vacuum line (now) comes down from above the rear of the transmission on the right (passenger) side and passes by the exhaust hanger that is right behind the flex section of the exhaust. The trucker routed it on top of the skid plate below the transmission and over to the left side in order to keep it off the ground. It has a white plastic or nylon insert in the end which is about an inch long, 1/2" in diameter and has a small flange on the end with a slot in it. One side is worn away a bit from dragging on the ground. There is about an 1/8" hole in the center of it. The section that was dragging on the ground is probably three feet long.

I am guessing that this may be a vacuum line that possibly has to do with controlling the transmission? It is too far back to be able to see from the engine compartment above where it originates from and where it became disconnected from.

I think it will have to be in the air for me to figure it out and I don't have a good way to do that tonight.

1. Anybody know what this hose goes to?
2. What damage might be caused by driving with it disconnected? (Wife thinks it is a little funky on upshifts, but nothing horrible).
3. Should I plug the line until it can be reconnected?

Sounds like either the trans or t-case vent tube,could not have been put back on properly if you have had the trans/t-case dropped for any reason.Nothing vacuum operated on either your trans or t-case.

So, no problem with driving with it where it is located now and no reason to plug it, right?

I had the same thing happen on a long road trip. I noticed it while At the gas station. I had to put it above the skid. Everything was to hot to feel around and try to find out where it lived. It's still hanging on the skid at the moment. Maybe this tread will tell me where I need to route it to.

Yeah a big problem if it rains or your trans get's a little to hot.It attaches to the trans dipstick tube,as high as it will go.

What tj said, it should be mounted up high to avoid water intrusion if off roading or when doing water crossings.

I tried rerouting mine to the trans dip stick just now. Not enough room. I imagine it was originally routed along top of trans but now I can't reach up there and no room to reach down in the engine compartment. I just wedged it up at high as I could. I will attempt another go at it when its not 100 degrees and can get a little dirtier. May try to use some weed eater line to snake down to try to pull it up that way.
DOC, if you have better luck let me know how you routed yours.
