Based on another thread in here, I checked my air filter (and found it dirty but not unusable). Behind the air filter box there is a clear plastic inline "fuel filter" of the kind that you might find on a gasoline tractor. The filter appeared dry and clean, but I can't figure out what it is for. I know it isnt the fuel filter and I never heard of brakes/power steering having a filter.

Does anyone know what that filter is for and when it might need to be changed?

Thats a filter for the built-in vacuum pump on the R428 diesel engine. It's purpose is to keep dirt out of the vacuum pump. Kevin of VM Mortori on another forum mentioned that they put a 25K replacement interval as insurance, in case moisture and dirt built up in the filter. The vacuum is used to actuate the VGT vanes under command from the ECM. The black pastic tank that the filter is connected to is a vacuum reservoir to assist in faster turbo vgt vane activation when the ECM calls for different boost levels.

It's a filter for the vacuum controls on the turbo, rather than the air going to the turbo. Nice little touch. As I learn more about this engine, I keep being impressed with its design. I cannot find another diesel engine less than 8 Liters that has replaceable wet liners in the engine block. Not the Cummins 5.9, the PSD or the Duramax. VGT is nice touch too. At 17K my engine is begining to loosen up and rev more freely than ever. Pulls like a locomotive when passing on the freeway, up the steepest hills in the Blue Ridge Parkway, and gets 21-23 mpg in town, 30 - 32 mpg on the Interstate. Love this engine. Man how did we get along on just gasolene?
