Post subject:  Tranny overheat?
We are in my buddy's CRD towing an 89 dodge raider on my tow dolly through the PA mountains when all of a sudden we lost all power, like someone threw it into neutral. We coasted to a stop and pulled off the road. The tranny fluid dipstick was hot as hell, so we let it idle for about 10 minutes and then it was fine. No trans temp light ever came on. Is this a program in the computer that is a safety or did we overheat the piss out of the tranny and got lucky? We are driving it now and are just getting on I-80.

Anyone???? We're really curious what happened here... Made it back fine, transmission shifts perfectly. No codes stored from it... :?

I had no issues in Pa towing a 24ft TT but I do have a tranny cooler. I did have issues with the engine getting hot. Do you have a tranny cooler?

I'm doing this long distance and from memory so... IIRC, check your owners manual, excess heat (tranny or engine coolant) will trigger a "limp" mode which cuts/reduces the power level but not like being thrown into neutral. Normal rule of thumb on tranny coolant temp is if the dip stick can be touched coolant is not at operating temp but if touching burns or feels like it's burning your finger it's at operating temp. If overheated it stinks of burning and turns black. Sounds like a possible overheat situation though and adding a tranny cooler is cheap insurance if you haul heavy loads.

You might also want to consider replacing your OEM fan clutch with the Hayden heavy duty one and the fan with the 11 blade nylon Jeep one. Hayden cuts in earlier in temp rise curve and shuts down overheat much better than stock fan clutch and 11 blade moves more air

It's my Jeep that had this problem. The ATF has a nice red look to it still. It had a about 8k on the filter and fuild. With a little bit of black left on a rag when I wipe off the stick. It had a bit of a acid smell so I'm going to get a filter and fuild change. I took it on a trip today, and had no problems so I think I got lucky and didn't cook the thing. I don't haul heavy loads alot,but I think I'm going to get the tranny cooler and the Hayden fan clutch just to be safe.

I think the fan clutch alone may solve most of your problems... that thing has definitely failed. We'll do yours and mine at the same time I guess. Since you don't tow anything heavy, with yesterday being the exception, I would not bother with the tranny cooler. :2cents:

If you are doing the fan clutch then do a fan shroud mod to improve future access at the same time. I don't have access to my cheat sheet but a search of this forum on my user name and the word "shroud" should get you there
