Hi guys,
I recently bought a 2005 KJ Liberty sports, 2.8Lt CRD.

The gear change from 2nd to 3rd is very jerky. I don't think it is a mechanical problem.
It is like what ever is controling the gear change of the auto, takes the power away too soon, changes into 3rd, then puts the power back real suddenly.
Which makes the car jerk.
It is the first 4x4 that I have owned, this maybe the way 4x4 are.
I bought the Jeep because I needed a tow vehical, I don't go offroad or anything.
Any sugestions ?
Rob

People seem to have a habit of putting the wrong ATF in these transmissions which causes strange behavior (and worse). Try a fluid change using ATF+4. If it's still shifting strange after that take it to the dealer and have the transmission reset and put into learning mode.

Owners manual ? Follow the book and check the trany fluid level 1st, could simply be low.
Some tranys need to be checked while hot (cold), engine running, in neutral etc., the procedures can vary for auto boxes.

What @ChesterCRD said.

Be advised that the programming on this transmission, while not particularly jerky as a matter of normal course, is, um, "peculiar" in several ways. There are certain conditions of load and throttle position that cause it to do, um, "peculiar" things. Among other things I've noticed is that suddenly backing off the throttle at certain speeds, just as the gears are getting close to a change-point will cause a jerk or odd "clang." It is not the smoothest auto transmission I've ever driven.
