I have a Cherokee (UK) 2.5 CRD that just cuts out and wont restart until 10, 15 0r 20 mins later. Initially it was more intermittent and seemed to always die as I was backing of the throttle. It will now die after 10 -15 mins idling on the drive. If you try to restart it straight away in will turn over but not fire, leave it for 10 -20 mins and it will start up. It’s been into a local garage (who I trust) and it shows no error codes past or present. It’s also had a new fuel filter and head fitted but to no avail. Any ideas?

Injector or air in the line, vapor locked.

Did you pump the fuel head to see if the primer firms up?

Sound like air in fuel. Check the filter for tightness? Replace if needed. Check the hoses at the fuel head, the clamps cut into them. Trim the hose as needed. Pump and bleed the fuel system. As long as your sure you have no leaks, Also try placing the outlet (blowing side) of a dry/wet vac to the fuel tank with a rag to seal and open the bleeder. Fuel should run out with no air. I have never done this but it was posted. I think its a great idea.

Bleeding the fuel head is always a good starting point but keef says the fuel head and filter are new and the problem did not go away. While I'm not sure I understand "It will now die after 10 -15 mins idling on the drive" (that US vs UK english language thing I imagine) I note the comment about it dieing when backing off the throttle combined with a wait of 10-20 minutes for a restart which implies this happens on an engine that's at operating temperature. That suggests to me a possible heat induced sensor problem that goes away when things cool down.

There are at least 2 posts (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64199&start=80 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66905) about similar problems that were traced to heat impact on the crank position sensor. A quick glance at 2.5L CRD FSM stuff on Sir Sam's NOOB site indicates that this sensor is on the 2.5L engine.

Worth checking as the diagnosis test is a pretty simply one.

It could also be a hot restart issue due to a failing crank position sensor.

This actually sounds like the issue I have been having. Sometime will not restart or will die while driving. Dealer wants me to throw $2500 in wireharness at it and see if it will fix the problem.

Take the sensor out and do the hair dryer test on it. If the resistance skyrockets when it gets hot, it's shot.
