Post subject:  Timing tools for rent in the Midwest? (I'm in Iowa)
Anybody on here want to rent their timing tools? I picked up the VM1052 & 1053 cam pins on eBay today. I may also buy the VM1089 crank pin. But, I really need the VM1085 cam gear locking tool because I will be removing the intake manifold/valve cover. The buildup of sludge in the intake is really bad! I'm in eastern Iowa. Thanks! -Mike

I have never been able to use the crank pin. Too much crude in the threads in the block to use it.

See 05 FSM on how to use an Allen wrench for this pin and only this pin (e.g. not for cam pin).

I did this before I got the crank pin. I pulled the allen out and had to turn the crank a little to insert the pin, so it was close but not right on.

I do have a thread restoring/tap kit. should be able to clean up the threads if needed. So I guess this hole is just open? I haven't looked for it yet. Seems it should have a plug of some kind to keep it clean!

No plug, just a open threaded hole.
I was able to use the crankpin tool in both of my CRDs and someone elses CRD, but just barely.
After twisting a rifle brush in the rusty threads, I was able to thread pin in about 3/4 of a turn by hand, then I snugged with pliers a little more.
It was threaded in strait and held the crank dead on without worry of moving.

hi just did mine last week all I did was (before stripping any thing) fit cam locking pins temporally then I marked a piece of 3mm x 60mm wide plate to align with the 12mm holes in gears and the cover fixing holes making sure socket will still fit on center bolt. I then used set screws and nuts to lock plate to gear and 5mm sets to attach plate to cover housing. DO.NOT ATTEMPT TO LOOSEN OR FULLY TIGHTEN centrer bolts with cam locking pins in as they can not take the torque needed. What I did was just nip the bolt up with pins in then remove them and let the plate just made take the strain.

Thanks for the tip, I realized the locking pins could easily be destroyed. Really can't figure out why they didn't put a key in the gears, that make no sense! So you fabricated your own cam gear locking plate? Got any pictures? That might be the way for me to go too. I have a bunch of aluminum plate. Just gotta figure out how to secure the gears to the plate, and have access to the bolts holding the cam gears to the camshafts. There's gotta be a way to do it without a 600.00 tool!

OhmegaMike - I don't know if you have posted where you are but doing so or adding it to your signature would help as most of us that have tools are reluctant to loan them out offsite, so to speak, but are certainly willing to let them be used in our presence.

That said, http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html used a TDI tool he had on hand; j888dth's post just above would work if I understand it correctly; and someone, don't have the link, made a decent tool out of some angle iron. Anything that would hold the gears in the same relative position with no stress on the "pins" while the cam bolts are loosened/tightened will do. However, 1) I'd still be over cautious and witness mark everything just in case and 2) just FYI there is no need to loosen cam bolts, FSM notwithstanding, unless you are doing the water pump, just be sure to count TB teeth between points before and after.

Also note the correct relative position of the 1) cam notches (facing each other) and 2) crankshaft bolts (3/6/9/12 o'clock)

papaindigo, I'm located in Eastern Iowa, about an hour drive from IL. I would be willing to pay for shipping, rental fee, and deposit for the use of the tools. I may call GDE tomorrow and see if they have any available too. I would be willing to buy the tools, but the only place I can find the cam gear tool it thru Miller for 680.00. It was available thru Mopar for 239 or something, but is no longer available. That's a bargain compared to 680.00!

I am doing the water pump, and removing the intake to get it cleaned out. Intake has 90k mi with no EHM! Nasty!

sorry never thought to take any photos. But what I did was screw throu plate with nut on other side then the thread sticks throu one of the gear hole's no need to fit nut to other side, the plate then held in place using the top 3 5mm holes that hold front cover in place
