The smell of hot brakes and the rear wheels almost too hot to touch was a good indication that the parking brake was stuck again. :furious: I had cleaned the parking brake struts and levers last year with the sand blaster and greased the pin, this lasted only a year.
I probably should have bought new OEM plated parts for it like I did with CRD #1, but geeze it was $60.00 a wheel for the parts THAT I could only find at the Jeep dealership, I tried to economize.

Do you use the parking brake? I mean more then once a month. Is the adjuster window grommet still in place? That missing without constant use and cleaning can lead to a bad parking brake. Also not washing the brakes adds to the problem, just use a high pressure wand and spary between the rotor and backing plate at least once a month will keep the corrosion down with constant use of the P brake, can be washed easily with the wheels still on.

I use the parking brake every time the jeep is parked.
It would pretty impossible to clean and lube the offending parts without removing the rear rotors to access the parking brake hardware.
Out of sight, out of mind, until trouble appears.

Easy to clean,I do it every sunday and never take a wheel off.Same parking brake design as yours and zero failure in 3 years and used daily(and hold my 6000lbs KJ on a steep incline).

jeepdan I don't know what parts you needed but it's my understanding that the parking brake assembly for the KJ is the same for the 3.7L gasser as for the CRD. If so O'Reilly's price for a parking brake kit (Part # H7328 whick excludes pads) is $21.99 and it appears to do both wheels. I suspect NAPA and other good parts stores have similar kits.

:dizzy: You might clean it every Sunday, but have you ever taken the rear rotors off?
The parking brake is inside of a drum or "hat brake"

Thanks papaindigo, The two parts that I have had trouble with; the lever that the cable connects to, and the strut that the lever pivots on do not come in a hardware/service kit that I have found, only from dealer.

Yes I know where and how the parking brake works, and yes I've had the rear rotors off many times for other work.Spraying between the back of the rotor and the front of the backing plate will clean the inside of the rotor hat and the parking barkes themselfs and will drain out nicely also.
