Post subject:  Cold problem. flutter, dying engine

I purchased a 2005 jeep liberty about a month ago for my girlfriend and its been giving us some problems now that the temps around 50 degrees, which should have no effect on it. but when i start it everything is fine, the trouble comes when i put it into gear the motor starts to flutter a little bit and then the motor starts going so slow it sounds like its about to turn off then it will jump back to a smooth idle for about five seconds and then go rough again, it has dies twice while doing this. and will only do it before the needle gets off the c on the thermostat the jeep has no codes. and the new fuel head is installed (i thought air in the fuel could be a possibility). but i haven't even made my first payment on the thing, its upsetting. any help would very much be appreciated

Could be early stages of a sticking EGR valve.

If it's a sticky EGR valve they can be cleaned. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=59352&p=659410#p659410 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62495

@ GreenDieselEngineering, im not new to diesels, but i am new to any e.g.r equiped diesels. what about the egr sticking would cause this? and i have already been looking into your flash tunner, with the tunning to diable the egr, would the problem go away. or do you believe it should be cleaned/replaced?

also it has never thrown a check engine light.

The GDE tune will solve your issue.

If it is sticking, would it not have to be cleaned first, so as not to be stuck partially open any longer, before a tune deletes the EGR? Maybe I am misunderstanding something. I was going to get a tune eventually, but money keeps going elsewhere.

tune is the best thing I've done to the Jeep

But what about the e.g.r being stuck would cause it to act this way? Is it recirculating more exhausts gases than it taking in new air through the intake?

Well - in order to get atm pressure exhaust into a pressurized intake

They decided to put in a valve that chokes the intake flow significantly

uuummh a throttle valve....throttle as in suffocate....

part of the EGR system - and it all clogs up with exhaust (mixed with the friendly oil coming in from the CCV system)

they did not design the EGR system with engine reliability in mind....

best ERG fix is the GDE tune - a little expensive - but well worth it

CCV oil can be fixed with Provent or EHM (check the Noob guide)

ppcole,

Your EGR is not sticking open, it is not opening enough. When the EGR only partial opens the intake throttle starts closing to compensate the pressure drop to drive more EGR flow. The intake throttle is closing too much and choking the engine giving you the poor running, idle undershoots and surging when the limit is hit and EGR momentarily shuts off.

For sure, if the EGR is sticking open the GDE tune will not solve the issue. In that case, you need to remove the EGR valve, clean and then reinstall. Then the tune will prevent further issues.
