My 2005 CRD won't start. It will crank but take off. Has no injection pulse. I am at a loss of what to do. Made a funny ticking noise right before it died. Any suggestions? |

Most likely first place to check is to prime the fuel system. |

More information required to respond. Mileage? Has the timing belt to your certain knowledge been replaced? If so, when? (Date and miles) How long have you owned it? You say 'died'; is this a failure to start or a failure to run? Did it quit, or was it running when you shut it off, and now won't start? What service/repair history does it have? Is the check engine light on? If so, what codes does it show? Describe in more detail the ticking noise. When did you hear it? for how long? How loud was it? Did the start of the noise coincide with any change in vehicle operation? what is the typical use of the vehicle and how much of what sort of driving do you do with it when it runs? anything else you think is noteworthy? |

Here is some more info... Mileage? 97,500 Has the timing belt to your certain knowledge been replaced? If so, when? Have no knowledge of if/when the timing belt was replaced. How long have you owned it? Two years. You say 'died'; is this a failure to start or a failure to run? Did it quit, or was it running when you shut it off, and now won't start? Was running at highway speed (60 or so). Heard a ticking noise like a rock in a tire that went with the rpm of the motor. What service/repair history does it have? Little to none, never had an issue with it. Did have Green Diesel program it. Is the check engine light on? I believe so. Coming up with a crank case sensor error. Had that fixed and still has issue. If so, what codes does it show? Describe in more detail the ticking noise. When did you hear it? for how long? How loud was it? Did the start of the noise coincide with any change in vehicle operation? The noise came very suddenly. Nothing different has been done. It was fairly loud that I could hear over the motor. It sounded like a rock in the tire or if a dipstick wasn't pushed far enough in. It lasted for about 10 seconds, check engine light came on and motor died while driving. what is the typical use of the vehicle and how much of what sort of driving do you do with it when it runs? It is used for commuting back and forth. Drives about 40 miles per day. anything else you think is noteworthy? Have always taken good care of it. Father in law works at a garage and has a hard time scanning it due to the rarity of the motor. Do you know where parts could be picked up for a decent price??? |

Sounds like either the timing belt failed, or something related to that department, or you may have lost an engine. What kind of oil/filter have you been using? How often have you been changing it? Best thing is to check the timing using the correct tools. I can get parts at good prices if you are interested. I still have not launched my CRD parts website. I get Mopar parts/Gates belts usually. As for the code(s)... I have a Harbor Freight scan tool... it works fine with my CRD... |

ticking with engine speed - does sound like some of the folks who have had the timing belt skip a tooth. realize you're not at 100K yet - but that belt is still 7+ years old - age may be as much of a factor as mileage. you do need to find a way to read the codes - that would help sort out potential problems FYI cevans is trying to get IDparts going with CRD stuff http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=721871#p721871 |

Noises at speed (tapping especially) and following speed of the motor... Not good. Does the engine still have oil in it? - This is a BIG one and the first thing I would check before worrying about codes. You had a MECHANICAL sound, which will need a mechanical solution. Reading the codes is sadly a secondary issue at the moment. With the information provided thus far, you need to verify the mechanical timing with the proper tools, and do a bottom-to-top inspection of the entire block. Why? You are looking for holes. How did the engine "just die at speed" on you? Any noises associated with that? It does sound like the timing may have jumped, but that doesn't mean that was the only problem either. |

Largely concur with other members here. Mileage/time is correct for a broken timing belt, so the first thing I would do is check the belt timing; you can do this with some hex keys or some bolts and a grinder if you don't have access to the right tools. If the belt timing is off now, then you have likely skipped some teeth and will need to replace your rockers as well as the belt. There are several good threads on TB replacement which I suggest that you read along with the manual. I would also suggest that you check the turbo endplay while you are in there, and check/replace the glow plugs with ss, not ceramic. Geordi's suggestion about checking the oil level and looking for block penetrations before you embark on top end repairs is a good one too. WRT parts, ID parts seems well thought of, and Mike Rausch can get parts at reasonable prices. I get many parts by shopping online. |
