LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Timing Belt Stripped

Well the belt gave out before I could get it replaced and I'm sure I lost some rocker arms.
Has anyone done a write up on how to replace AFTER it breaks?
I have the TB cover off and the belt shredded about 10 teeth.

It is an 06 with ...................................... 177,500 on it :shock:

Got it finished today. Really not as big a deal as I thought it was going to be. 4 of the 16 rocker were broken but replaced all of them anyway.

Made my own tools the beesvillebeefarm method. Went to the hardware store and picked up a 4 ft. piece of alum. angle and cut it in half and made a cam gear holder similar to the VW version.

I also only replaced the front half of the water pump which saves a lot of time. I wish I would of known then what I know now and I would of replaced the belt 77000 miles ago saving a lot of money and headache. :banghead:

NICE! good choice replacing all the rockers & lifters. They are a weak item in these engines.

Quick ?, does a timing belt replacement require a Computer check / reset as like in a Vag Com program? Seems no one mentions this at the end of a TB buttoned it up job. THANKS

As for a write up, I know some folks have done the job, but don't recall seeing a write up, perhaps someone can chime in on this subject.

I know Geordi and SirSam can do repair with their eyes closed and one hand tied behind their back. Their fee is very reasonable compared to a shop and advice from this forum is free. Also, there may be a member who lives near you that may be able to help. What is your location?

I know galatron and turbo bill have delt with this issue and there are some posts by galatron. The hardest part appears to be getting the rockers to say in place on reassembly but there are post on how to "lower" things back in place without disturbing the rockers. Retiming the engine is pretty straight forward with the cam and flywheel pins. I'm sure Sir Sam and geordi can provide any helpful details. I too would be interested in miles and age of vehicle (05 or 06?). I've pretty much settled on the opinion that the TB interval really should be 6yrs or 100,000 miles whichever comes first with the 6yr interval being just the belt (serp belt too) and a visual check of the idler/tensioner bearings. I'm just not comfortable with an aged timing belt. In my case my 05 only has ca. 46,000 miles on it and at my rate of driving, now that I'm retired, if I went by 100,000 miles I wouldn't change the belt until the car was like 15-20 years old which is way too long IMHO PS that eBay price on rockers looks suspect as it works out to $10 US per rocker but no lifters. IIRC the rocker arm/lifter (16 sets needed) can be found for under $50 US for each set. I'm not very trusting of what looks like too good to be true prices.

It is an 06 with ...................................... 177,500 on it I just did not have the time to work on it. Even now it has sat for a month before I could open it up. I asked for months and months at many different shops (Houston area) and none of them would touch it with a 10 foot pole. The dealership looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them about it. In retrospect I should of set it aside and just worked on it as I had the time. Would of been better off than I am now.

Not sure where Papaindigo is seeing lifters but no rockers, they are ONLY sold as a set by anyone reputable. They are available for about $25/each shipped from the UK, which is both genuine VM parts and the best price I have ever seen. The set I got was the newer design and very high quality, $403 shipped after the exchange rate. As for your situation... Houston has a very nice airport, I've been through there many times. I'd be willing to come rebuild your engine for a reasonable price above the travel, and yes... As RacerTracer says, I probably COULD do it with my eyes closed. Surprisingly, I also haven't had a problem with the rockers falling off while reinstalling them. If you are interested, PM me and we can talk. I'm amazed that your belt lasted that long... SHAME ON YOU for asking it to last that long! The change schedule is 100k miles for a reason.

I did the job on my CRD. Yours at 177k i would look into replacing all the rocker/ lifters. This job is just time consuming, not realy hard. The bigest issue is moving the wiring harness from the right (passanger side) to the left (drivers side). So the intake can be removed. After the intake is removed inspect the cams. When the rockers break they sometimes ride on the cams and damage. All the lobes should be smooth. I could sit here and wright up start to finish but i dont know what all you require. Anyone had a camshaft seal leaking? The intake camshaft has a lot of black soot around it.

Beats hell out of replacing pistons and rods and cylinder head when the timing belt breaks. And a darn sight cheaper, too. And yeah, hindsight is always better than foresight. I'm a long ways from needing an TB but have done many VW TB's Did you make a cam *gear* holder or a *cam* holder? It it's the cam holder tell us about how you used a VW style cam holder on a CRD Inquiring minds want to know
