Well,
Not sure what is going on with my CRD. Last Monday vehicle started vibrating horribly and shortely thereafter I lost my rear driveshaft. Morning after vehicle was towed and left in my driveway, there was a huge puddle of ATF fluid. I orginally thought it'd be from the transfer case thinking that the vibration from a failing u-joint caused a seal to leak but after inspection on my only day off this week, it appears that the ATF fluid came from the tranny.

Assuming the worst, does anybody have a link to a writeup on dropping the tranny? I searched for an hour using the forum search engine with litle luck. I've dropped tranny's before but not on a CRD and I any help would be appreciated.

I still don't know what happened and I'm not 100% sure the tranny needs replacement. I was still able to back up the jeep in the garage and drive up onto wheel ramps in 4 low but it cost me more ATF fluid leaking from somewhere near the tranny area. I need to get some ATF +4 and add a couple of quarts into the tranny before I start engine again to see where the fluid is coming from. Maybe if I'm lucky, it'll be a busted line or something but cooling (return and feed) look fine to me.

Thanks again for any links or advice.

Drew

Well - no one did a Tranny writeup - but there were some on Torque Converters and to get to the torque converter - you pull the tranny

gmctd of course - but very few photos -time consuming - because it's 4x4

When you say you lost the driveshaft - how lost?
sounds to me like the Ujoint failed - and then when the slip yoke on the driveshaft pulls out - the seal to the tranny no longer seals -oil leaks

shouldn't be a tranny drop - just fix the driveshaft reseal and add oil.

I was off today and finally got peak under the vehicle.

I was wrong, the ATF fluid didn't come from the xfer case. Here is what I find interesting and perhaps may help me diagnose what went wrong. I topped off the tranny fluid and started vehicle. Almost instantly, a distinct flow of ATF was coming out of......a small opening on the bottom of the STARTER. WTF????? It is not coming from anywhere else, it is not coming from above the starter and dropping down around it, it is pouring out of a small openig on the bottom of the starter.

Does anybody know what this means????????? Could it be as simple as a front pump or related seal?

Thanks,
Drew

See GDE write up on pulling tranny to do TC at http://www.greendieselengineering.com/f ... st/37.page and catcrd's similar one at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34713&p=362301

As to your question re the starter I really have no clue other than to note there is a TC inspection port IIRC a bit above the start.
