Hi all,
I'm having a real nightmare finiding the correct spec oil for my 2.5 crd KJ. (currently at 106'000 miles)
Rotella T6 & Mobil 1 delvac 5/40 aint available in my country and im stuggling to find an oil in the uk that is of similar spec
to the engine oils you guys in the US are using.
Every website ive visited have suggested oil with the wrong specs and i'm literally driving myself insane searching through
website after website.

These guys sell numerous manufacturers oils..... but non seem up to spec...i think ??

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Could anyone clarify a suitable engine oil for me?

Cheers

Being neither conversant with the specs on the 5 cylinder 2.5 L engine nor the specs and reputations of UK oils, I'm not going to be of much help. But I can say that the 2.8 L 4 cylinder engine calls for Mobil 1 0w-40 oil, which I see on that web site you referenced. I'm sure somebody from the UK will chime in shortly with better info for you. I DO know that there are indeed oils that will work, because both those engines are used in a lot of different vehicles on your side of the pond.

Just for clarification.... my 2.5 crd is more or less the same as the 2.8 you guys in the US have...4 cyclinder, but just a smaller bore & less hp (143)...but i get 28mpg city driving as opposed to 23mpg :P ...so it not all bad! well apart from the cost of a litre of diesel in the UK which currently stands at $2.24 a litre!!

Use the Amsoil European, Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel or Mobil Super 3000. All depends on cost.

Use the Mobil 1 0w-40 as naturist has stated....you get cold weather there at times.

Here we use a 20w-50 Synthetic as it is a lot warmer.

Mobil 1 0-40 Turbo Diesel - get it through Amazon.co.uk - about £10 cheaper than buying from Halfords. You'll need 6 litres.

Standard UK oil spec is 10w40 A3/B3/B4 semi synth.

You can also use HDEO to CI 4 like Shell Rimula R6 LM or Delvac XHP LE. Both in 10w40.

To get the best performance, economy and engine protection you can use 0w40 or 5w40.

These are specs as listed for the 2.5 VM engine.

Bosch oil filters from EuroCarParts currently £8 - 20% online discount.

If you find a distributer willing to sell to you the HDEO's can be had for around £80/90 for 20 litres.

Oil change interval was 10k till 2011 then it increased to 12k.

I change it slightly earlier to be honest but will leave it the whole 10k if I chnge to HDEO.

One thing to remember is that the low sulphur content of UK and Californian fuels helps a lot in allowing longer oil change intervals, as the sulphur ends up in the oil after combustion and make the oil acidic, the TBN the gets depleted neutralising this acidity.

refer to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_low_sulphur_diesel

This appears to be current. EU (and OZ) 10 ppm (Germany est. 3-5 ppm), US (including CA) and Canada 15 ppm, SA 50 ppm.

There is not a lot of difference in fuel between North American and Europe. . . excepting Germany.

EU has 10 ppm sulphur. The US and Canada 15 ppm. California is part of the US. . . 15 ppm.

Remember the 'other guys' at bitog forums. . . . the ones that wrote posts without research?

Have heard it from more than one source that US diesel has more sulphur than EU.

And if Cali diesel has the same ppm as rest of the US why do so many people believe otherwise.

But then I pay little attention to Wikipedia as the info is only as good as those posting it, who is suspect in many things have less than encyclopedic knowledge.

For example ULSD has been the norm much earlier than 2008, it was adopted much sooner than that.

The only fuel the continued as before was off road diesel used by farmers Nd marine diesel used by inshore boats.

Though from last year they are now both ULSD.

As it is often mooted that the reason for shorter OCI in the US compared to the EU is due to TBN depletion due to the higher sulphur content how else do you explain the difference in OCI, as the sulphur issue seems to fit rather well.

And don't confuse the maximum limit with what is actuay in the fuel, I would suspect it an awful lot less than 10ppm.

But even if you consider 10ppm and 15ppm then there is 50% more sulphur in US fuel which would not allow it to be called ULSD in the EU.

And if you want to abuse someone purely due to their country of origin please have the good grace to do it in public.

Nothing in the world is worse that a coward.

I think you need to take a more global view if you want to understand which countries inhabitants are widely regarded as "dullards"

As car as the "illiteracy" and "ignorance" part.

Have you ever read a book that doesn't have cold out sections and large pictures?

You feel the abuse is the correct way to discuss an issue?

Is abuse the way this forum works?

"You are a dullard. Brits have long been know for ignorance and illiteracy."

Or is it just something you keep in reserve for non Americans?

Why not look up the word Xenophobic?

I think you will find it applies to you rather well.

Though thanks for pointing out that the ppm in California is the same as the rest of the US.

That will serve me right for listening to a Californian and taking his information at face value.

After all why would I consider his opinion to be wrong, he lives there.

I am not going to continue this post.

As it is not fair on the rest of the forum who have been welcoming and helpful.

I think perhaps you need some counselling. Or perhaps Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to deal with your xenophobia.

Brit here who really doesn't want to get involved with the above.

To return to topic - 2.5CRD in UK - as a UK owner, I've been told to just use Castrol Magnatec 10w 40. Does anyone know if that's ok?

Castrol Magnatec should be ok - I just prefer the Mobil 0-40. As I said - not a bad price through Amazon.

I find it rather amusing people in US are seeking European formulation of oil for this Italian mistress and guys from UK want US formulations go figure....I am confused myself as some guys in the know have told here that 10w40 with higher Zinc like in Euro. Is better than 0w40. Then there is talk of CI4 + ...VI of 185 BTN low saps mid saps high saps my head is hurting....please help

If you go for Magnatec you can get 8 litres in Costco for £35.

They also sell Chevron Supreme 10w40 for £44 for 20 litres.

I personally don't run semi synth oil longer than 5/6k miles very often, call me paranoid!

http://www.inlinefilters.co.uk

I think that is the correct address do Baldwin oil filters B178 for £2:83 and fuel filters for unde a fiver, much better price than Bosch at EuroCarParts which are (before online discount) £8 and £22. Mobil 1 New Life or Turbo Diesel 0w40 are both £30 for 5 litres, Castrol Edge the same for 4 litres.

If you run a CI 4 oil you will be protecting your engine a little bit better.

Shell Rimula R6 LM 10w40 or Mobil Delvac XHP LE 10w40 are available from distributors for around £80/90 for 20 litres but are meant for long oil change intervals so should laugh at 10k in a VM, wether it be 2.5 or 2.8.

My 2.5 VM is running sweat on Mobil 1 New Life 0w40, this is the newer SN version, previously it was just SM, what difference there is I don't know.

I have run Chevron Supreme for 7k before, just changed Valvolene Maxlife Diesel 10w40 synth blend which was in 8k.

Any good oil will see you right, I would not run conventional/dino/mineral oil in a VM lump.

If you do a lot of local running about consider doing shorter oil change intervals.

Approved viscosities are 0w40, 5w40 and 10w40. That is straight from an Email sent to VM themselves. B3, B4 or CI 4. They actually say you can use B5 aswell but i have never found a B5 oil that is -w40.
