Post subject:  CRD Issues

We have a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD. It has approximately 52000 miles on it and has been regularly maintained. When I am NOT pulling and traveling down the highway at 65mph with the cruise on I get a shuttering. It does it more often in the cold. This am is was 15 degrees and we shuttered intermitantly for the 30 miles to work. If I was a betting girl I would say that it won't shutter home or it will do so considerably less? We have recently done the Green Diesel Engineering Eco Tune with Full Torque. This had no effect on the problem. We are not thinking TC do to it happening without a load. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When you say shuddering, you may want to describe better what you are experiencing. Are you sure that it is not TC related? What RPM are you running at w/ the cruise set at 65mph? Also it sounds like you have had this problem for a while - how long has this problem been going on?

I would contact Kieth at GDE as he is a wealth of knowledge WRT our CRD's and may be able to help you diagnose the shuddering issue that you describe.

Try driving with the OD off (the little black button on the side of the shift handle). Any shudder then ?

A flat spot in a tire or bad U joint can cause a vibration that can be mistaken for shudder.
The shudder that is Torque Converter Related should happen under acceleration when the converter is locked up.

Based on my experience with TC shudder on an F-37 TC right after installing the GDE Stage II turbo you will feel that thru the "go" pedal and as noted droping out of OD or backing off the "go" pedal should instantly make TC shudder go away. If on the other had it feels like the engine is "missing" I'd check for air in the fuel especially if you have a 1s gen fuel head (see Sir Sam's NOOB guide)

We have had this problem for almost a year now. It only seems to happen when it is cold. I have felt it is the summer but maybe once a month and once in my thirty mile drive. I drive thirty miles to work two days a week which is on a highway the other days I am in town and have no problem. Yesterday when it was 15-20 degrees it was continuous almost all the way. It feels like the engine is not getting enough fuel and could stall. You can't hear anything but you feel three quick shutters (little jolts) and then nothing and thirty sec later it does it again. Last winter I tried to recreate the feeling for my mechanic. The only way that I was able to do it was on the first drive of the morning. A few times it will do it later in the day but not as regularly maybe only once or not as hard. I have had the problem happen with a scan tool attached and nothing is getting read.
I am not sure if the following is coincidental or not but this problem started after we had to get the new glow plugs and when our mechanic took it to the dealer to have the computer reprogrammed for the new plugs. The local jeep dealer fried our computer and had to order us a new one.
I have spoke with Keith at GDE he doesn't seem to think that it is a TC problem. His guess was possible injectors, I have not discussed this possibility with my mechanic yet.
I hope that this answers some questions and will give you a better understanding of my problem. Also I was correct in my original post no problems on the way home yesterday afternoon. However I was wrong on the mileage it has ~68k. Sorry our truck has 52k!

I really appreciate all of your responses.

I will pay closer attention to the rpm but I would guess 18-1900
I will also try no overdrive next week.

Check/Clean the MAP/MAF sensors recently? Air Filter fairly new?

Just thoughts.

This is from my mechanic: Hey just read your post on lost Jeep. You might want to add the fact that I already cleaned maf and map and you have the updated fuel head.

fuel primed?
no air leaking in?
driveshaft ( that was my issue for that sympton, though that should be rare)

when issue arises, try priming the at the fuel filter and see if it goes away.

This is a long shot but I'll throw it out there just in case it triggers any other ideas. This is one of the few vehicles that I've owned that you can actually feel the AC compressor kick in and out in the form of a very slight jolt. This is most noticeable at the lower end of the range of 5th gear. I wonder if a faulty compressor/clutch could result in type of shudder the OP feels?

Right around 64 MPH is when the F37 transmission tune done by Chrysler shifts into 5th and locks up the torque converter. They also flashed a "torque reduction" feature(?) into the engine controler to eliminate this that happened on the original as from the factory tunes did at about 59 MPH.
For the most part Chrysler's F37 tunes eliminated the "shudder" problem but left us with enemic CRD's :furious:

Your GDE "full torque" ECO tune has much less torque reduction programming in over drive gears that both 4th and 5th are but you have more then
I have the GDE "full torque tune" and both the pre and post TCM (transmission) controllers and with the updated Chrysler "euro" torque converter intended for the 07 and up CRD's that were not available in the US.
Here's a couple of things you can try. Check the transmission fluid level, change the transmission fluid and filters, and finally update your torque converter to a better one like the Sun Coast one.
