hi everyone i understand that an egr bypass on a 04 2.5 crd is an easy task to perform . what benefits and drawbacks will be achieved from doing this, ie fuel cons, and will it smoke more. thanks.
The EGR on the 2.5 and early 2.8 Export CRDs is operated by the vacuum solenoid which is the black plastic piece next to the air filter. It has a small plastic and paper filter dangling from it, has a two-wire power plug in it and two thin plastic plugs plugged into it.
It picks up vacuum from the vacuum pump and activates the EGR. The ECU is very dumb in this case...it only checks that the solenoid is not disconnected and is not shorted....what you do with the vacuum is transparent to the ECU.
If you disconnect the outer of the two thin plastic pipes at the solenoid you can then screw a small self-tapping screw into the exposed plastic port and then put the pipe back over the head of the screw to hide it...this disables the EGR.
The main reason everybody wants to disable the EGR is that the EGR pumps hot sooty and abrasive exhaust gas directly into the intake manifold....not good for the engine.
I find that I have much better pulling power at highway speeds especially when when going up steep hills at speed. Before deleting the EGR I could hear all sorts of "wheezing" coming from the engine when getting near the top of the hill...now it simply keeps on going.
I notice absolutely no difference in smoke output and in fuel consumption
Give it a try...it is very easy to reverse the fitment.
