My wife and I are looking to get a bigger vehicle to fit our two 70 pounds dogs and an up coming little one. From owning a 05.5 VW Jetta TDI I instantly thought of a 2011+ VW Touareg TDI, V6 Diesel, 8 speed, test drove one and fell in love. Soon realized it was way out of our budget. So I thought of the Jeep I saw while I was finding a new vehicle for me a few months ago.
While doing a search I found nothing close by. The closest I found is about 200 miles away. Not a big deal, we enjoy road trips, but I want to make sure its going to be worth the trip.

Most of the prices I have seen on the forum and such are 10k and up. The lowest I have seen on Autotrader is 13.6K.

At 90k miles your looking at a timing belt VERY SOON :juggle:
I've owned 1996 Passat and 1999.5 Jetta TDI's and did timing belts on both of those and many other VW diesels but would think twice maybe three times before attempting the job on my CRD :dizzy:
You need the special tools and expecially if your doing the water pump.

Back to the price. I paid $25,300 including tax and title for my 2006 Limited NEW. But it does not have leather, sunroof, evic but most of everything else listed is standard on the limited or CRD.
I'm thinking $10K is a more reasonable but still high price.

Also the CRD's support and reliability is nowhere near a TDI :dizzy: The best support you can get is here on LOST. If you've had bad experiece at a VW dealer multiply this by two or three when dealing with Jeep (Chrysler) dealers where they only sold two or three or maybe no CRD's at all :5SHOTS:
The Liberty is pretty high off the ground and the rear doors are narrow so keep that in mind when thinking about your dogs. The seats even on a Limited are on the same hardness level as the Jetta so you should be used to that part.
I hope this helps you make your decision. Additionally a car 05 is now 8 years old

The second picture says "2007" on the windshield and has steel wheels both ruleing out a CRD in North America.
I can't tell if it's the same one as the first picture.
At 94k the first one if it's a CRD will need a timing belt even sooner.
How about this one in Cleveland. Also a sport and it needs a timing belt NOW.
BUT they list both Traction Control, not on 05's, and limited Locking differential. Could (should) be Limited Slip only if that. Most of the other items were standard equiptment on a CRD.

If you guys get really adventerous and want to come down to LA, maybe for some good cajun food, I'll even throw some cajun french around for you, make it a cultural trip...you can buy mine for a whole lot less. Shameless plug. :mrgreen:

Welcome to lost, I'm also a VW TDI owner but needed a little more space and much higher towing. I also was shocked by the price tag on a VW that could do this. I ended up getting mine last march for $13.6K with 43K miles and 2 years left on the 7yr/70k warranty (New in 06). I paid a little more for the low miles and warranty. You should be able to get a sport for around 10k around 100k miles, at least in my area I see them from time to time. But if you are like me paying a little more for the Limited would have been more them worth it. (I really missed heated leather seated) I ended up adding power seats, better radio and speakers. At the same time, I also like the KISS method in my cars. The Jeep overall is a lot more simple than my VW.

To be honest, I think a Liberty KJ CRD is NOT what you need. I personally think you need to find yourself a Grand Cherokee CRD for your dogs and upcoming child.

+1, in all seriousness. These things are not spacious. Don't be like the guy who told me he was interested in buying my CRD only to discover he could not fit three car seats in one after we met up with hours already spent answering his questions. :|

Wait about a month and you can buy my Jeep LIberty for a good price. It'll even have a new transmission torque converter, new front pump, transgo shift kit, driveshaft with new u-joints, and all of the goodies such as GDE eco tune (might as well spend the 50 bucks and get it upgraded to a hot tune w/euro converter), Racor fuel filter head, provent CCV, etc...etc..

You all scared him away! BUT!!! All this information is 100% true as I have discovered in the three weeks I've owned my CRD. My local dealer has NEVER seen one until mine rolled into the driveway. I'm lucky that they have Bob Goodman as a technician (very respected Cummins tech in SoCal) and he has a nephew with an '05 CRD. But he is NOT factory trained on the CRD and the dealer does NOT have the special tool kit to do the major maintenance.

I love the fact that I'm driving something that 99.99% of Americans doesn't know exist! Hell VW has been importing diesels since the 70's and it's safe to say 85% of Americans don't know this... :banghead:

Just remember that that Jeep could not sell the CRD in CA new,had to be used with so many miles on before it could be registered in your state,same goes for many small diesels and CA.Can't expect a large population to know about it if they were never sold as "new" there.

30k? Yeah that's to much lol there were couple fj cruisers with fresh paint and 350's marlin crawlers asking $110k each! Yeah he is in very very good part california must be growing pot out his back door. I was thinking about selling mine but dam I have gone through whole dam thing. Can not find another vehicle that will pull new airstream and deliver over 23mpg or more. Car's are really expensive right now new so if anything prices of used should be going up not down right now.

I have a 70lb dog and I rarely use the Liberty to transport him. He likes to hang his head out the window and the Liberty rear window in narrow. Also about 1/3 of the window is stationary since that section is over the wheel well. He doesn't seem as comfy hanging his head out as he does in my Jetta.
Also dog slobbers is not easy to clean out of the cloth seats in the Liberty.
