My wife's CRD has been cranking over noticeably slower lately and also takes a bit longer to fire after sitting overnight. Since the battery is the original Red Top it was time for new battery power with cold winter temperatures soon to come. I've read the forums here about different batteries that will work in the CRD's but I went to my local NAPA to see what they had available. I purchased a new NAPA Legend Premium 84 NAPA part #8434. This is a Group 34 battery with 850 CCA @0*F and an 84 month warranty and my price was $91. It fit with no issues in the CRD battery box minus the blanket that went around the original red top. The Jeep cranks faster and fires sooner than I can ever remember! By the way, when the counter guy looked up the batter for the CRD in his lookup guide, the only battery listed was the Red Top. That's when I asked him if he had anything in a Group 34 with a minimum of 800CCAs and he mentioned this battery. Looks to be an excellent replacement.

Diesels need a lot of power to crank. Looks like you make a wise decision. The computer goes crazy with a bad battery, not to mention the extra load on the starter.

FYI - try to save the blanket if you can

one of the sensors that monitors the charging - reads the temperature of the battery

it'll change without the blanket (don't know if it's significant - but it will change)

Where's the sensor ?
I had all that crap out of there to replace the upper "A" arm (suspension) & I never noticed a sensor on the battery or in the blanket or on the battery base.

I've been running without the battery blanket for two years. No issues charging and I didn't notice a sensor.

I had it all out too and the answer is easy, there is NONE on a CRD :BANANA:

BATTERY TEMPERATURE
SENSOR
DESCRIPTION
The Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) is attached
to the battery tray located under the battery.
OPERATION
The BTS is used to determine the battery temperature
and control battery charging rate. This temperature
data, along with data from monitored line
voltage, is used by the PCM to vary the battery
charging rate. System voltage will be higher at colder
temperatures and is gradually reduced at warmer
temperatures.
The PCM sends 5 volts to the sensor and is
grounded through the sensor return line. As temperature
increases, resistance in the sensor decreases
and the detection voltage at the PCM increases.

Not sure the exact year they stopped using the battery temp sensor but I beleive '05 was the last year.

Noticed those who responded as no sensor in there are '06 KJ's.

2006 KJ does not have it, I had to replace my battery tray because I got a little over-zealous removing a battery and I'm 6'3" and 280. Regardless, there's no sensor down there, or I would've broken it too when I pulled the tray out with my battery.

For what it's worth both the 05 and 06 FSM speak to having a battery temp sensor (pages 8F-24 and 8F-30 respectively in detail; plus a number of other references) and indicate the sensor is in a hole in the middle of the battery tray. I can state for a fact that there is no such sensor on my 05 (built 7/05) nor is there a hole in the battery tray for mounting such a sensor; there isn't even a place for such a hole. In addition the FSM illustration of the sensor removal is clearly not from a CRD. I suspect we have found another place where the FSM is just flat wrong at least in the US market.

Before someone says maybe it's only on the gasser I'll note one spot mentions it being on diesels. Also for what it's worth there is no listing for a "battery temp" sensor in the 05 parts manual.

I live off grid.
I rely on batteries every night for electricity.
My battery charging system has a battery temperature sensor to assist in battery charging voltage. It is attached to a central battery to determine battery temperature.
To place a sensor in the battery tray would be really stupid. For it (the sensor) to be effective, it would have to be attached to the battery mid-way on the side of the battery itself.
