| Post subject: | turbo question |
Hello all, Finally I replaced the torque converter on my Liberty CRD - all splines in the old one were sheared off... The jeep is running fine now except the turbo - I do not hear it anymore and the jeep seems sluggish on acceleration. There is no any codes present. The turbo was working fine before torque converter problem. The jeep was sitting still for about a month waiting for the new converter and I suspect the turbo stuck while sitting for long period of time. The big question now - what to do and how bring life back to the turbo? Any thoughts or advice? Thank you all in anticipation. |

Things to look at: 1. Turbo/intercooler hoses for leaks/tears - must remove from vehicle to check and while off check airbox to turbo hose for tear on bottom just in front of turbo and check turbo wheel for play (very slight for/aft ok; side to side should be zero or maybe a bare feel of play) 2. boost pressure solenoid - see my post at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=70602&p=757348&hilit=boost+solenoid#p757348 3. gummed up turbo variable vanes - per GDE You can check the vane functionality at idle in park. Underneath the vacuum actuator on the turbo is rod extending downward connected to the vane mechanism. If you pull off the vacuum line at the turbo, the arm should drop about 1/2 inch and then raise back up after reconnecting the vacuum line. It is a bit difficult to see the rod, but this is the easiest method to check for proper VGT vane moevment. 4. possible pinched vacuum line running from turbo vacuum supply on behind coolant tank that might could be pinched when pulling/installing tranny while doing TC replacement. Also any wiring plugs that might have been pulled loose during that process. |

How often, prior to convertor change or after, do you take that Italian mongrel out and beats the hairs off of it? As Papa suggests, if everything checks out good, plumbing wise etc. and too you can reach in the fresh air side, aka the compressor wheel, does the wheel turn freely and have no/very little slop fore/aft and up/down? If all is good, get her good and warm and then do your level best to put your foot through the floorboard! It's called the "Italian Tune-Up" and it can work wonders. Suggest fresh oil and filter beforehand for good measure. Hope this helps. |

Check all the wiring harness plugs and see if any became unplugged when the torque converter was replaced. Also check to make sure none of the hoses like the small ones that control the turbo vein actuator got cut or knocked off. Always check out and evaluate the easy and cheap fix options before you start shelling out the big bucks. I checked my turbo when I replaced my Timing Belt and it had no detectable play and turned free. |
