My Jeep low coolant light came on along with P1263 this time around. When the engine warmed up the coolant system would pressurized like normal and the glow plug code would be gone for the rest of the day. I been having about 24 oz coolant leak about every 6 months for the last year or so. So last month when it did it I poured 24 oz bars leak head gasket sealer in the coolant tank. I expected to test and replace a glow plug but to this date that code didn't come back. After a month I haven't see any loss of coolant either.

My question is, did pouring a $30 of bars head gasket sealer fix the leak and resulting glow plug code? BTW the Jeep runs great.

Maybe the leak was spraying water onto the glow plug circuit somewhere and fixing the leak stopped the glow plug code.

I personally do not trust any of these "Bars Leaks" type of sealer....they can cause more problems than fix problems but I am happy that it seems to have worked for you. :)

This brings back bad memories, it sure sounds like what I went through. A cylinder head replacement will set you back about $3,000.00 and about 3 months waiting for a new head. If the bars leak sealed the leak then it's worth its weight in gold, let us know how it works out over the long run because you may have found a simple cure.

the BarsLeak didn't do squat for me. still had to replace the gasket, and that's when we found the crack. It took no time at all to get the replacement head -- ordered it from moparonlineparts.com -- and got it in just a few days.

But it's worth a shot. 1% of the cost of the job against the odds . . . I'd do it again.

Well I'm torn between fixing it and trading it in at 113k. If it does start leaking again and it has to be at least head gasket. I would just go ahead and get a new head and be done with it. It was a very slow leak for awhile so maybe that was the reason the bars is working at least for now. Naturist, was the crack in the head near a glow plug?

A while back there was a picture here of a freeze plug on the underside of a head someplace that the member found was their leak.

While I know there have been examples of coolant leaks associated with head gaskets and cylinder heads I would not automatically assume that's the source of a leak absent coolant in the oil, oil in the coolant, or odd pressure in the coolant recovery tank. There are a host of places in the coolant system where there can be small leaks where no coolant winds up on the ground. Best bet for locating such leaks is adding a UV dye to the coolant system, driving for a few days, and looking for leaks with a UV light (not in bright sun).

I once chased a persistent coolant leak that turned out to be 1 drop at a time out of a hose connection where the drop evaporated almost as fast as it came out.

In the case of my cracked head, the crack was between two valves. I don't remember whether they were intake or exhaust, or one of each.

mine had multiple P1263's - as the crack in the head blew antifreeze on the Glow plug

replaced under extended warranty (never saw the crack or the head - they just replaced it).

Just a FYI, I have used Bars Leak many times as a fast fix and as unintended long term. So the longest running is a 77 Ford that had a blown head gasket. 7 years later still does not leak. The stuff works most of the time and can get you out of a pinch.
