I went to check the temperature of the front brake disc to see if they were really hot since I have heard this can reduce MPGs and I noticed the front rims were evenly brown, but not the rears. This wiped away pretty easily with my finger but water and Charlie's soap really had no affect unless I scrubbed with my hands. Now the question, We have a GDE tune and I still did the EHM, could this be soot from the EHM (but on the outsides?) or is it from increased wear due to the issues I have rear about? Something else maybe? Please help and thanks P.S. after having sat for about 30 minutes in 55 degree weather I could not hold my finger on the disc for 30 sec. |

How often do you clean your wheels? Could it just be brake dust? If you look, a lot of people who neglect their wheels have darker colored front wheels than rears. |

Go to Ceramic pads so it's not so dusty. Better stopping power too. |

And don't work well cold and produce more heat on the rotors and suck for towing.KJ's have a hard enough time keeping the front rotors straight. Semi-metallic is better,more so if you ever tow with your CRD but yes you get more brake dust. |

It's a very fine coating of rotor dust/iron that's gone rusty. |

So we went to dinner last night, maybe 5 miles away. I was fairly gentle on the breaks coming home and when we got out I felt the disc. I almost got a blister just touching the disc for a sec. |

If your that worried get a IR temp gun and after a drive measure the rotors to get a temp,as long as both sides are fairly close in temps(no more then 20-30 degrees apart) your most likely fine,and under 350 degrees. |

I just had my rear calipers rebuilt today because my left rear seized. I've always wondered how I would know if it seized and now I know. I thought the car in front of me blew out their clutch. It was a strong smell. Then I got alone in a parking lot and I realized it was me. Can't miss that! If your calipers are stuck, I suspect you would smell burn brake pad. |

Wife took it to the dealer and they said that there was nothing amiss, although the wheels did turn not as easy as they should. Wonder if they realized it is a 4x4? Cost $38 |

yup, it's brake dust. mine's done that forever: ya gotta wash 'em from time to time. I wonder . . . do you use your left foot for braking? If so, hot brakes might be God's way of warning you to stop resting your foot on the brake pedal. If not, perhaps the front brakes are dragging for some other reason. Either way, it bears looking into, as it shouldn't be so. |

There is a "rubber" sleeve or boot on the front brake assembly that tends to swell and cause the pads to drag. Lots of chat about this on the forum. |

Check the front brake hoses. I had to change mine this time last year. The lines on both sides were buldging in several spots causing the calipers to drag. |
