On changing the tensioner I found it can't be removed unless the big pulley below it is taken off. What should be done with the pin that keeps the new tensioner locked up? Should it be removed before bolting on the unit or wait till it's bolted down?

If the alternator belt pulley shows a wobble (haven't checked it yet) what's the fix?

Thanks for help.

Richard

Replace the overrun decultching pulley by it's self or replace the whole alternator. Some have successfully replaced just the pulley and some have messed up the alternator trying :banghead:
If it's bad it will cause the tensioner to bounce at idel speed causing you to think it's the tensioner :SOMBRERO:
Mine went out at just over 50K miles and my extended warranty replaced the whole alternator.

Joe:

Thanks for the info. Replaced the tensioner and it still chirps coming from the alternator.

If I replace the decoupler, how hard is it to do? What does the decoupler do?

What is one supposed to do when reaching 80000 miles on these CRD's? Throw them out?
Never seems to end what has to be replaced/fixed on this fun to drive little jeep but I am beginning to think it's a lemon. New alternator is big $$$$. Decoupler is $89 on ID Parts.

What to do?

Best,

Richard

The "decoupler" on the front of the alternator is essentially an alternator "clutch". There is a decent chat on this at viewtopic.php?t=39287 . Bottom line is it can be removed with the Miller tool, pricey tool, or some have had luck with an impact wrench and appropriate driver. Alternatively some have been able to get a "lifetime" warrantied alternator with decoupler from like Autozone for IIRC ca. $150.

Don't under any circumstances try a cheaper decoupler as they won't stand the strain.
