Bad days ahead for me and I need all the help I can get from all you guys in CRD land. Never posted before but will be a lot now as I have had a major meltdown. My wife called and said come rescue me while out shopping. I got there and the Liberty was DOA, engine locked up. No water in reservoir, all in the oil pan. Long story short please take a look at pics. So far, cylinder head wasted, piston wasted, injector tip smashed, cylinder itself extremely galled and possibly cracked but won't know for sure until I get the block out tomorrow. What I need to know is do ANY of you guys know of anyone that has a used cylinder head and block or a whole engine? Or, do any of you know who could re-sleeve or bore the block? Please, any and all advice is needed. Keith at Green Diesel told me to post as soon as pics were available to try to get the word out. I can ship block anywhere if that is what I need to do. I am in Arizona. Not too sure about anyone out here knowing much about these as most CRD's seem to be back east.

Holy cow! I'm sorry that this happened to you. I can't help, but I'm sure this board can get you going in the right direction.

I wonder if the glow plug broke and jammed in the valve, the piston hit the valve and broke the valve off causing the damage... just a hunch... Looks like you'll need a piston, and possibly a cylinder liner. If the other pistons and cylinders look alright, you may want to re-ring the other 3, or just replace all 4 cylinders pistons/rings.

I agree MRausch82 but who re-sleeves these things? All the other cylinders/pistons are great. Cylinder head is a whole different matter, no amount of machining is going to fix it. I want to get a used head if possible.

The sleeves are replaceable. Each cylinder can be removed individually rather simply.

Agreed with the above. The engine has wet liners so cylinder wall damage can be fixed with a new liner, and you can buy rebuild kits for them. Suggest you contact George at VM Specialist UK as I think he can supply everything you need. I think he can get heads as well. As to who can do it, you will need a shop with a hydraulic press to replace the liners so I imagine a diesel engine rebuilder is what you need.

Of course you need to know why it failed so it doesn't happen again.

This is one of those times when you guys in Australia have a major advantage of us Yanks. These things are rare here in the states and trying to find any type of good used parts is very hard. Mopar will supply all of it brand new but at ridiculous prices. If you know anyone with a used cylinder head down under I would be interested. I have a friend in Missouri with a full on shop and he could press out the cylinder and install a new one. I am trying not to go broke replacing the head. As you said I do need to figure out what happened in the first place. I am pulling the block today and will have it on the engine stand tonight so maybe I will be able to see a little better. The head gasket appeared to be in good condition so I need to see the cylinder to see if it is cracked. Not sure yet how the water got in.

Bolt failure, head gasket failure... Doesn't really matter. You will also REALLY want to inspect the rod bearings on the bottom end, I lost 2 engines to rod bearing failure without ever losing the top end or the water.

Google VM Specialist (It is a UK company, but they will ship worldwide) and they will have everything you need. For a head, look first at car-part.com and see what boneyards might have for you. 05 and 06 are the same head / block etc.

I doubt that just a glow plug tip could do all that, I would think that the tip would have been smashed to dust, but I guess anything is possible. This isn't the first engine that has swallowed a valve and really made a mess... I seem to think that the last one I heard about was also in #4 cylinder, not that there is any specialness to that cylinder, other than being a pain to work on.

IIRC, isn't one of the Miller special tools for sleeve removal and replacement?

Sorry to hear of your engine. Just some things that I notice as I had the head off my CRD in May about 10,000 miles ago. From your pics of the head it appears that there may have been silght antifreeze leakage into cylinder #4 on the water port on passenger side rear of cylinder #4 (assuming USA) notice slight rust discoloration on pic of engine block. This is just where mine was leaking. If antifreeze gets into the cylinder it causes much havoc since water does not compress when the piston comes to the top. Mine is leaking compression into the antifreeze storage bottle again so I assume that I have a leak again. Hope it makes it til spring since no heat in my garage!!! I will be pulling off head checking for warping and putting in ARP head Studs, Hope she makes it til Spring.

and finally if you notice my login: Yes I do live in Wisconsin, I do make cheese for a living and I have never or ever will wear a cheese head hat.
