I stumbled upon these while scanning though the Mobil 1 site. This is puzzling to say the least. When did all these Mobil 1 5w-40 formulations come about. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 Supreme Performance Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 5W-40.aspx and this one: Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40, Supreme Performance Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 5W-40.aspx and this one: Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 Supreme Performance Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 5W-40.aspx and this one: Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 - Emission System Protection Advanced Performance Synthetic Engine Oil, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 5W-40.aspx and this one: Mobil 1 Formula™ M 5W-40 Advanced Performance Synthetic Engine Oil, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 5W-40.aspx Can you make heads or tails of this, any input on the above formulations for our CRD? I wonder if any of these new formulatons could alleviate the cam wear problems or carbon build up on moving parts that we are experiencing with our engine as indicated in the recent photographs from members posts and others previously to that during an engine rebuild. We need Bob the Oil Guy on this board. P.S. I was aked to also add the specs for the OEM specified oil on the list. Mobil 1™ 0W-40 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil, http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/ ... 0W-40.aspx Mobil 1 0w-40 European Car Formula. Is not available to the US Market and couldn't get any info on it from the Mobil 1 USA web site. |

Look at the "Specifications and Approvals" section. This will tell you what each formulation is designed for. Some for pre-emissions (w/o DPF Systems), some post emissions (CJ-4)(w/DPF systems), and 2 others for different Mercedes specifications(MB). Also some that appear to be similar (API CI-4) but have other diesel manufacturers specs listed including ACEA specs which are European specs. API CJ-4 supersedes older API specs. European makers have their own specs some which some are low SAPS (sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, Sulfur) additives for DPF systems, medium SAPS and high SAPS for other applications. Not all oils are the same. You have to look at the specifications for the oil and the specifications your vehicle requires to choose which oil is for you. |

There are losts for sure. Applications for every engine type. But Mobil 1 will only tell you to use 0W-40 in a CRD. |

Personally I've been using Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30HDD. This is an API CI-4+ oil and meets many other manufacturers specs. I bought the '05 Liberty CRD in '07 with 17K miles on her and now has 90K. Runs great. I will be doing the TB replacement soon. |

Which of these has the highest zinc additive level? |

RandyB, I updated the first post with the Mobil 1 0w-40 info, but couldn't find any info on the Mobil 1 0w-40 European spec on the American Mobil 1 web site. I'll try looking for the specs on the European site later on. And here is a heads up for the American CRD'ers, Pep Boys Auto Parts has a running special on do-it yourself oil change ending 12/31/2012. Mobil 1 synthetic $29.99 for 5 qt motor oil plus a Mobil 1 filer, you will need to add an additional 1 or 2 quarts depending on which filter you use. Mash on the link below. http://www.pepboys.com/docs/pdf/dec2012 ... -31_cp.pdf It's a great deal if you need an oil change and you have come to a conclusion on which oil to use for your CRD. |

You want something with high zinc levels. I am using M1 0w40. AFAIK, we can only get the M1 0w40 in the "European Car Formula" here in the US. I got several cases while in Delaware during Pep Boys black friday sale. It was $5/quart and no sales tax. |

I know some diesel rated oils have lowered yet zinc levels due to the emissions systems on newer diesels. Not sure if the 0w40 is lower. I have used it in several diesel car applications with great success, including engines I have rebuilt or opened up many miles later. No ill effects were noted. |

I use Rotella T6 and a bottle of ZDDP (zinc) from Pep Boys. I know the new oils have a lot less zinc so that the EPA cat can live, but I never prefered cats anyway. When the cat dies, I'll skin it and gut it, sew it back up on put it where it belongs. The short of the matter, add a bottle of zinc to every oil change and go with the euro spec oil in the service manual, "F" the cat !! |

Also I was under the impression that roller rocker cams didn't require as much zinc. Does the excess zinc plug up a cat, or just reduce it's effectiveness? Plugging up a cat would be expensive and require replacement in my state, as you would not pass inspection without one. |

Is Zinc really a big deal? Does this sheet mean that 0W 40 is okay? I see that 5W 40 has 100 ppm more, but it's for particulate filters on the exhaust. . We don't have those do we? |

CORRECT... we do not have DPF's and if you have a EGR delete. Adding zinc will not help. O...the oil debate continues!!!! |
