My CRD is just loving to drain my wallet now it does not engage 2wd , normally when the lever is down it should engage 2WD but at that position it shows up as part time 4wd then it goes into full time then N and 4WD low as well. So basically I can engage all modes except 2WD. Now I have been driving around in N as I am told it is the same as 2wD low. The drive is rough and MPG sucks, any ideas ? I intend to take it to stealer or a good tranny shop tomorrow .

That has nothing to do with your transmission, it's a transfer case selector issue. The fact that you can drive around indicates, that the selector cable is likey to be the problem. The little white plastic bushing at the transfer case arm attachment point is a know weak point. It might have broken and your transfer case cable come off the selector arm post, in which case no matter where you move the handle it would probably be staying where it was when it broke. You can check it by crawling under and looking at where the cable attachs to the arm, or take ti to a dealer.

Others have had issues with the cable that goes from the lever to the transfer case. Search the old threads for that, and should find some enlightening information. This is an issue with which I have not had to deal.

X2 probably a selector cable issue. See my Four wheel drive shift cable fix over in the CRD Tech section; that plastic piece and cable clip are available from the Dealer and dirt cheap if that's what you need.

Thanks for all the support guys, I will get it checked up first thing tomorrow, I sure hope it is a minor issue as I could drive around in all other configurations.

Seriously, if you're noticing a drive-ability issue, I bet you're stuck in 4WD HI Part Time. You're feeling the lock-up between the axles. If your dash light indicates "neutral" and you can still drive, your cable must have broken.

Most of us have a hard time getting from 2WD into 4WD Full Time. The chain gets caught on 4WD Part Time if we shift too quickly past it.

How are your tires? Do your front and back tires have the same tread life? It really does make a difference. I had 20k more miles in the front than the back, and my Jeep would not shift unless I was on sand or ice because there was too much tension between the axles.

Tires have about 40% tread all around. I drive in part time where normally 2wd would engage it seems that shifter is and the gears are one step apart.

If you're in full time 4WD and you're trying to shift to 2WD, do you first move the shifter into 4WD part time and wait a bit (drive 50-100 yards) before you shift the rest of the way into 2WD?

That made all of the difference for me. The chain takes a bit to switch between gears. If you rush from 4WD Full time to 2WD, the chain will just stick in 4WD part Time.

Ok i did take it to a local tranny shop they hoisted it about two feet and confirmed that there are no issues with tranny it is the on board computer that is sensing it wrong and lighting up wrong gear info.
So in normal drive mode it lights up as part time but in fact it is in 2WD and then i counted all shifter positions and in Neutral and 4WD low both spots it lights up 4low. otherwise all shift positions are engaged and accounted for. Now the problem is found but they do not have a sure fire solution to it they said they will tear open the dash and start charging me for diagnostics after first hour then what ever expenses for the part , so do you think i should pay for this when they are clueless or any other options besides taking it to stealer? Thanks

The sensor is in the transfer case, and is probably correctly sensing the position.

The 4wd handle is attached to the transfer case by means of a cable. This cable has a couple of plastic bushings at the ends that go bad, and when they do, the transfer case does not get switched to the proper position. There is likely NOTHING wrong with either the computer or the transmission. SEARCH THE SITE For threads on this cable. I would check this cable before doing anything else.
