Post subject:  2005 Problems

Hello, first post here!
Recently my Dad gave me his 2005 Liberty Diesel, which he bought new off the lot.
It has 102k Miles on it.. He has been religious when it comes to the maintenance. Was never tuned up, everything is original.
In the past couple months it has had some problems.
The coolant started to leak out, we couldn't locate the leak but it would slowly leak out until the low coolant light would come on.This caused some problems(thick black smoke, loss of power, weird sound at idle) My dad took it to a trusted diesel mechanic and paid 1200$ for repairs. unfortunately he can not locate the invoice and doesn't remember what was replaced or fixed. Everything worked on the jeep for about 2 weeks and then all the previous problems started up again.
Was just wondering what could be causing these symptoms(thick black smoke upon acceleration, loss of power, weird sound while idling, oil covering area near turbo).

Was told by the diesel mechanic that it was probably the egr valve.

Just wanted to get some of your guys advice.

Thank you!

$1200 lesson in looking here first.

The power loss / smoke is most likely related to the fact that you have a bone-stock CRD with 100,000 miles of ingesting its own oil from the CCV, rotting out the stock boost hoses.

Are the two large hoses under the hood covered in oily filth? If the answer is yes, where do you suspect that oil came from?
Here's a hint: The boost pressure forces the oil THROUGH the walls of the hose, rotting them out from the inside. Chances are, one of those two hoses has now developed a hole. Usually it is the intercooler-to-engine hose, and the hole will be on the bottom and impossible to see / feel until you remove them both and search carefully.

Replace the hoses, and your power problems should be solved. As for the coolant loss, that could be any number of reasons, and we need more information. Coolant loss WILL NOT cause black smoke, power loss, or any 'weird sounds at idle'... ALL of these are symptoms of the same thing: Not enough air for the fuel the computer is injecting. You have an air leak. Is the coolant still leaking?
Upgraded boost hoses are available from a company called SAMCO, and I believe IDparts.com (a vendor that supplies us and is active here) is a reseller for them. I would avoid the dealer's options, some (like me) have gotten the same non-oil-proof hose as a replacement, rather than the upgraded dealer version that should be available. The Samco hoses are almost the same price (slightly more) and are silicone and MUCH better.

Where are you located? There may be a guru nearby that can help you out with this vehicle. The dealer and most mechanics are sadly clueless about these, and often can do FAR more harm than good... While draining your wallet in their learning process.

Regarding the coolant leak, do you have coolant in the right side of the plastic coolant expansion tank?

X2 on boost hoses (see http://www.boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=328 for Samco's) while these are off to be inspected (you need to remove OEM mesh cover to inspect) you need to inspect the airbox to turbo hose for a split on the bottom just in front of the turbo where it tends to rot from CCV oil (dealer items costs ca. $60). If you pull the airbox hose on reinstall be sure to get airbox end all the way upto touching the MAF sensor before tightening the clamp lest you crush the airbox plastic outlet (been there done that).

Coolant leak. Racer is hinting at a head problem and can post a simple test if you do have coolant on that side. However, if your leak is slow my bet would be on a hose clamp problem which can be hard to find as there are a number of places where an invisible leak can occur because the coolant immediately evaporates. Your best bet may be to get some UV coolant dye from an auto parts store, add dye, drive for a day or so, look for leak with UV light which you can get pretty cheap from Amazon (do the looking in a shady area).

Read NOOB guide if you have not already done so.

At that mileage you need to have the timing belt job done ASAP.

I'd also recommend returning to the mechanic who should be able to produce a copy of the invoice/tell you what was done for the $1,200

Thanks for all the advice.

I'm located in Lexington,Kentucky

I have looked at the trusted mechanic list on this site, and one of the mechanics is 1.5miles from my house.

I will have to take a look at the hose's , right now its pouring down rain so i will have to wait until it stops.

Yes there is coolant in the in the right side of the plastic coolant expansion tank.

I will get back with all of you once i have a opportunity to look at the hoses

Thanks
