I looked up on tire rack to find the specs of the Goodyear Wrangler ST tires that came on the vehicle. They are 29.3" overall diameter / 708 revs per mile. The tires I am eyeballing are BFG Rugged Trail in a 245/70 16. They weigh 8 pounds more per tire, have a 29.5" overall diameter and 704 revs per mile. Do y'all think their is enough clearance for the extra width an .2" height? |

Remember that the .2" extra height will be split in two (above and below the center of the axle) so the tire will only be projecting into the wheel well elevation (height) .1 inch. As far as the width the factory stock tire is 9 or 9.5 inches wide when measured at its widest point while laying flat on the ground. So will it rub the wheel wells when fully turned lock to lock ? Don't know that answer. |

I ran a set of Uniroyals for a year on stock everything. No issues. It actually made my Odometer correct. |

I been running 245/70R/16 Hercules Terra Track AT for the best part of 3 years. for me no rubbing at first. now that the suspension is getting worn it seems I hear it rub a bit at full turn mostly when backing up. The size does fill the wheel arches nice and my speedometer is closer to correct as well. |

I forgot to bring up one more question. Do the pressure monitors need to be replaced when I change the tires? |

The honest answer is no although that's something of a calculated risk. The sensors have a built in battery and battery life averages 7 years with a general range from 5-12 years. So if you don't replace them you might have to replace 1 or more before the next tire change depending on how many miles you drive per year and how long tire tread lasts. I did not replace mine when I replaced OEM tires at 6 years but then stoutdog lost 1 on his 06 at about the same time after 5 years. Many places will quote you a price of ca. $70+ per sensor at the time of tire replacement which is something approaching hwy robbery. Dorman 974-001 works fine and runs about $23 per on Amazon. Poping a tire and mounting a new sensor shouldn't cost more than $10-20 and balancing is not needed as long as the tire and rim are marked so things go back in the same place. So replacing is kind of your call but if you do and they want big $s for the part bring 4 of the Dorman's for them to install at no or a nominal added cost. |

I did not replace mine and the shop said nothing about it. since i did loose a sensor on the tire i was carrying for the spare at the time. not due to the battery the valve stem leaked and the oem ones are not repairable like Doorman on ones you can change the valve stem. I also rotate all 5 tires so I need to keep all 5 working. the system monitors the spare too so if you are going to replace them in the others and change the spare tire also which is ideal in the case of changing tire sizes order one for the spare also. you can mix tire sizes for emergency but its not legal here for state safety inspection if its on the ground like that. also it can mess with the 4 wheel drive having tires or different size running on the ground. you would need to stay in rear drive if you got a flat and the spare was not the same size as the others. so if you are changing those sensors and the spare tire too order one for the spare. |
