The weather has been getting a little nippy lately. (20's) So after sitting a week and starting -after pluging if for about 4 hours- it starts right up and idles fine for about 30 seconds, then dies. Will not restart until a wait of about 5 minutes. After it restarts I give it throttle to idle at about 1000 rpm then all is well. It has done this several times this winter. Has a lift pump and when checking for air in the filter there is none. Any ideas or has anyone else experienced this? |

When is the last time that the fuel filter was replaced? How many miles are on your CRD? I have plugged in my CRD of late too for an hour or two in the morning and it has also fired right up in the nippiness. But, I have not had any of the other issues that you describe. Currently, I am running straight-from-the-pump diesel, no additives. You may also check into Stanadyne additives that lowers the gelling temperature point of diesel; the Performance additive especially. Fuel Filters can be bought in the aftermarket; they are the same ones, sans graphics, as the dealership just about 1/3rd less expensive. Hope this helps. |

Also, is it the original Fuel head or a 2nd Gen fuel head? If it's original, you might think of going ahead and ordering the 2nd gen(THIS SHOULD BE READ AS DO THIS BEFORE YOU REGRET IT). You'll get a free fuel filter out of the deal as well! Also, clean the MAP and MAF sensors if you haven't lately, and change your air filter. If it's that cold and getting colder (obviously) start using fuel additives to help with water in the lines and gelling issues. Try and remember that american diesel is garbage compared to what some other countries get, it behooves you to regularly change your fuel filter. |

Thanks all. Milage is 85,000 mile range, unknown age of fuel filter, I just received a new filter head, that will be swaped out directly. In this part of the world anti-jelling additives are added to the fuel at the station. My big diesel friends don't use additives in cold weather and are not having problems. MAP and MAF recently cleaned. Looks like the fuel filter is the place to start. |

your big diesel friends have lift pumps - stock you don't don't it's a vacuum to the tank - and it's more sensitive to a lot of things. doesn't mean its the cause - filter's more likely -but something to remember. |

So it seems that when I cold start with a low outside temp. the engine will go to a fast idle. When I start with a similar low outside temp. but the block heater plugged in it does not go to fast idle. I'm changing the fuel filter this weekend. We'll see what that does. P.S. 1 degree F this morning in sunny new Mexico.
