Post subject:  Torque converter replaced by dealer under service contract

I just had my torque converter replaced at a local dealer under my service contract. The part number listed for the replacement torque converter is R4736582AE. This does not appear to be the upgraded euro torque converter part number. Can anyone verify whether R4736582AE is a re-manufactured original TC, a re-manufactured European Liberty TC, or something else?

Thanks

Showing as a Remanufactured original in all my searches.

I inquired with the dealer about getting the RL037142AA or 68037142AA euro torque converter. Here is the reply.

----
My parts department has informed me that there is no way we can get our hands on one of the export converters. I spoke with our service manager to see if there was any possible way we could try to get one from another dealer that may have it in stock and I was informed at that point we cannot even install that converter. He told me that we have to put the same converter in due to federal guidelines. Even though you wouldn’t think it would make much of a difference, it does slightly alter the emissions of the vehicle and we cannot knowingly perform a service that will affect emissions. If there was any way you were able to procure one of those converters yourself, I cannot even install it here. However if that is an option that you are considering, a private shop may be able to do that for you just no Chrysler dealer. If there is anything else I can do to help let me know.

Is this a recent a change? I thought the euro TC was supposed to be the standard replacement part now.

The Euro has been on export only restriction for about 6-8 months now although there is some suggestion that a few are available at scattered dealers.

IMHO the service manager is full of it although I could be wrong. The shift points as they relate to engine output and indirectly maybe emissions will remain identical to the shift points prior to installing a Euro TC as the shift points are controlled by the TCM not the torque convertor. The only thing that will change is the Euro TC is less likely to fail under load than the stock TC (e.g. the one installed after the first few 2005 models and the one used as a replacement if needed as part of the F-37 service). Further I'll note that there are ample forum reports of dealers installing the Euro TC in the past.

Poppa and all

The original bad TC's that were replaced under the F-37 recall were used up until sometime in November 2005 and the number of them was around 11,000 this is all according the recall bulletin :dizzy:
So ALL 2005's and early 2006 CRD's had the TC that was replaced under the recall :juggle: Or should have at least.

The service manager was not totally full of it. As it was reported here a long while ago to "properly" substitute the "Euro" TC there had to be some kind of change paper filed with the feds. It was supposably not a big deal to do it but technically necessary.

Joe you probably know more than me about this but just so I can correctly wrap my head around this; as I understand it:
1. very early 05s had a TC with some sort of plastic part that caused the TC to die a very early death (what I think of as 1st gen TC)
2. later 05s had a TC without that plastic part (what I think of as the 2n gen TC) BUT that TC still was not fully up to the CRD power output hence the F-37 engine detune and TCM shift point reprogram (what I feel is a cheater way of "fixing" the real weak link which was clearly the TC). The F-37 included an inspection of the TC and replacement only if necessary.
3. F-37 was published in Dec 06 although it was preceded by at least one related TSB 18-023-06.
4. I'm somewhat unclear as to the end date of 06 factory production but it appears to me that the 2n gen TC was factory fitted to all 06 models and all but the very early 05s and that all vehicles that went thru the F-37 AND got a new TC got the 2n gen TC although I seem to recall a few luck folks who got a Euro as part of the F-37 by paying for the Euro.

Am I more or less correct? If not where am I off base.

That said I was not aware that any paperwork had to be filed with the feds to install a Euro. Why? As noted in my earlier post I don't see that installation of the Euro would have any impact on emissions and there was certainly no such paperwork requirement when SunCoast installed my TC. Is this somehow related to having a dealer do the work? Seems sort of silly; kind of like having to file fed paperwork to install non-OEM tires as those tires factor into mpg (more a gasser than diesel issue though)
