VM 1085 alternative:

I haven't tried this out, but I've been wondering if it was a good alternative for the 1085, this combined with that cheap pin set could make the service tools a bunch cheaper for the guys without them.

I had seen this, but with all the ranting about VM.1085 I thought there was some specific reason why we should only use it. I know a lot of people had made their own (I didn't feel comfortable doing that even though I'm a certified welder and journeyman railroad carman)... I also had seen some go as far as using wood blocks.. (wouldn't think of it).

It's good to see someone as knowledgeable as you say this is alright Sam, this will end up saving me a ton of money and heart ache, and now I won't have to borrow one from a dealership and worry about that (I hate borrowing tools).

I see how this is adjustable, will make sure to torque it down well.

I didn't say it was alright, just that its an alternative, I haven't seen one or played with one yet, I keep meaning to get it before I do a timing belt so I can check it out, but I haven't had the chance yet. Really, as long as it locks the gears in place properly it should work. At the end of the day the 1085 is still going to be the best thing, but I bet one of these other ones will work too.

What about the metal nerd sprocket buster tool used in the beesville farms write up? It's only $40 and has been used successfully on a few CRD's. I ordered one and plan on using it for my TB change in the near future.

I purchased it from metalnerd.com. It was $42 plus shipping. It is made for VW TDI timing belt changes, but the beesville farms write up shows it being used on the CRD.

Yeah, this is what I like to see. It's a great solution for diy replacement when you're only going to do it once or twice in the life of the vehicle. There's really no need to spend a load of money on a special tool. Just make sure you use a decent hardwood. I'd also tend to cut a block to fit between the upper and lower shims and put a C clamp around the whole assembly to hold it rigid.

Now, if you own a shop and work on many different models the general purpose tools are probably a great time saver. Similarly if you own a dealership the application specific tool may be the way to go but for most of us on this forum these are just an unnecessary waste of money.

The acid test is really ensuring everything is aligned properly afterwards before starting the engine which needs to be done regardless of how you secure the sprockets.

Just did the timing belt on mine with the Napa equivalent of this tool ($40). Worked fine.

Just did the timing belt on mine with the Napa equivalent of this tool ($40). Worked fine.

Pretty sure this is what I will use when I do my belt, rock auto sells the tool for 23.00 bucks!

since the gear aren't keyed to the camshafts..and there are locking pins for the cam shafts.
I'm thinking this just helps hold the cams in place while untorquing and retorquing..
or am I missing something..

if it just for hold the cams then any thing that holds them from moving it good enough..but not the timing belt..this might stretch.

I used a wood screw clamp wedged between(top to bottom) the gears while I change my wife timing belt..I didn't loosen the gears nor use cam pins..next time I'll use the cam pins..

The Leslie is not a great a tool for the CRD. I have tried it. The pin placement is not ideal
