crackling noise is happening at idle, it seems like it is coming from the alternator but i'm not sure. If i hit the gas even the slightest amount the noise completely disappears. I can drive the jeep for hours and the noise still happens at a stop and while coasting. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks |

http://youtu.be/9ZtfT4nUMHc Short Video, but this is the noise im talking about. lol i guess crackling wouldnt be the right word to describe it Its been doing this for years.. I just had the timing belt done less than 100 miles ago but that didn't help. The Jeep runs and drives fine, but this noise is driving me crazy and it sounds horrible. |

I have the same noise coming from my alternator ... Its the pulley or the decouple type clutch pulley ... When these pulley are going bad they make that noise ... I Am having start specialist out of Idaho Falls Put a new one on .. but its also a good idea to just replace it the whole alternator around 100k .. I have been driving on that pulley for a while now too and it hasn't failed .. but i have read some stories on this forum about them failing and leaving people stranded ... I haven't got it replaced yet so i cant exactly say that it is it ... But I am pretty positive its the pulley .. I can hear the defined noise Hope this helps |

If you see rusty powder around the front of the alternator pulley it's bad, get this: http://www.americanenginesco.com/servle ... CRD/Detail |

Pop the engine cover, crank up, at idle look down the serp belt from the alternator pulley to the serp belt tensioner. Is the tensioner noticably bouncing or very steady/slight bounce. If bouncing the alternator pulley is shot. If you drive a lot this way there is a good chance the serp belt tensioner will go too. Don't go cheap on replacement pulley or try to use a solid pulley. OEM or sometimes like autozone can supply a good lifetime warranty replacement. |
