I'm at a loss and my patience is up with this CRD. I just had the turbo replaced and the T/B and water pump replaced shortly before the turbo. However, every since the turbo was done, which was about 3,000-4000 miles ago, the fuel mileage as taken a sharp nose dive. I don't believe it is the winter fuel blend. I drive a Cummins and have no significant change in mileage nor have I seen this Jeep do this before. It has about 110,000 miles on it and the overhead consul averaged a little over 26 mpg. Now its around 21 mph +/-. It also seems to not have the snap it used too. To top it off, it seems to be going through oil. It smells like burnt oil a little after driving it too. I checked it and was able to add 1 quart, with about 800 miles left before its 6,500 mile oil change. I was burning oil before the turbo needed changed but it was also smoking pretty bad. I haven't noticed any excessive smoking. The engine temperature runs normal and I do have a HOT GDE tune, which was done a long time ago. Does anybody have any obvious ideas or things for me to check? Hell, I haven't worked on this thing for about a month so I guess my time is up. Maybe somebody should come buy this thing... Thanks, Craig |

just reading your description - it sounds like the turbo is still a problem. was this new? rebuilt? - any warranty? |

Check both of the CAC hose connections, especially the one to the turbo. |

That is a possibility... it was a brand new OEM turbo. I hate the thought of dealing with that again. |

I've already replaced all of the hoses with the Samco replacements. Maybe one of them didn't get back on correctly. I've also done the elephant mod. |

I would check with kieth and may be try the eco tune to see if it helps any. Also, Brand new turbos might need a braking period or else they wont last much at all. |

If you just recently did the EHM that could be the source of the burnt oil smell at least. |

When I did my EHM especially at first I got stinky oil smell as well. It has cleared up quite a bit since then but you can still smell it if it blows up into the windows. Generally after an oil change or a situation where you add oil there is to much in the engine (dipstick at the full mark is to much) and this oil will be blown right back out of the EHM so you will get a little bit of a cloud (especially notable at idle) |

The more I read cumulatively on this website, the more and more I think there are some serious design flaws with this engine. (duh) Namely the Rockers/Lifters, the metallurgy and design of them coupled with the acidity and corrosiveness of our 0w40 oil combined with the trash the EGR throws into the mix. Check to ensure the outlet hose on the coolant isn't clogged and causing your head to crack (nice design). When you did (Did you do it?) your turbo, did you check the oil lines feeding into the top and bottom, and did you change the gaskets on the old lines when you changed the turbo? I know I just put a used turbo I got from someone on these forums in, but I cleaned out the lines with non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner (There was a TON of gunk in both, but not enough to keep flow down, about 20% clogged) and cleaned all the gummed up stuff out of both of them, then changed both of the gaskets. I also put them back on with Red LocTite when I bolted them back in. It'll be a pain seeing the top one as the heat shield is covering it as far as I remember, but you can see the bottom one if you lay under the passenger side right behind the front axle and look up with a flash light. IF you're getting as tired as I am of repairs, it's probably the time to sell now. I'm thinking hard about it, but I have rocker/lifters to fix first provided I don't have a trashed head/valves/bottom end, plus a timing belt change, then we'll see what I do. |

Hexus, I'm extremely exhausted with this vehicle. My Cummins just keeps on running without a hint of an issue. I feel like this Jeep is an eggshell. I spend more money on this thing chasing one issue or the next. I wish a very large tree would fall on it! I didn't change the turbo out myself but new gaskets were installed and the oil hoses were flowing fine (I was told). Where is the outlet hose for the coolant that you are talking about? And wouldn't my coolant level be low if I had a cracked head? What are other symptoms of a cracked head? The oil smell could possibly be from the EHM but its been on there since the turbo was done. That produces a different smell to me. I will sniff around further to see. That has already come to mind but it doesn't sit right with me for some reason but who the heck knows? Thanks for the ideas guys! |

It's the 3/8 hose that runs from the radiator to the coolant reservoir on the passenger side of your engine compartment. Have you replaced your glow plugs yet? |

One thing that has me bothered a little more is my coolant is a little low in the reservoir. However, I don't smell any in the exhaust. And no, I haven't replaced your glow plugs yet. Its just one more thing to add to the list... Is there any reason why you ask? Something else that could be the issue? Thanks |

Thought I would post a fair update... Well, I put on the stock tire size for the winter and our mileage jumped right back up to where it always is, so the mystery of the fuel mileage was the tire size and most likely just the ratio's being off (speedometer/odometer). That lack of pep is also probably due to the increase in tire size. I'm leaking oil out the cooler lines so maybe that is why it was low last time I checked? Those lines need replaced so I'll get that done and keep an eye on it. It looks like the coolant wasn't actually low. When I added coolant to the reservoir, I saw it wasn't low, I just looked that way. I assume due to the color of the fluid and the reservoir itself. Anyway, I thought I would post my findings so I can eat crow. All is good for now. |

Be sure your EHM are not frozen at the low point causing CCV to push oil out somewhere? |
