Post subject:  Timing Tool question

Make me understand...... :dizzy:

If I am going to change the timing belt and water pump, can I just pin the cam shafts, pin the crankshaft and use a universal camshaft holder while I loosen the sprocket bolts. After putting the new belt on I could tighten the sprocket bolts using using the same holder. Why would I need to use the special tool VM-1085? Isn't it's purpose simply to hold the sprockets to keep from breaking a camshaft while loosening and tightening the sprocket bolts. :5SHOTS:

Bought it new 06 CRD, 86K Love/Hate relationship EHM, eccotune, crapped out egr, Fumato, gen2 fuel filter, 7v glo plugs, new motor mounts, new right rear speed sensor. 22 mpg around everywhere. :JEEPIN:

The goal is to hold the two cam pulleys completely motionless relative to the engine. Even a slight movement has the potential to damage either the camshaft securing pins or the valve cover/intake manifold/camshaft holder. The tolerance for alignment of the pins is VERY tight. It is undoubtedly possible to achieve the required motionless state in any number of ways, but the 1085 tool does this job perfectly, and easily with no potential for damage to the camshaft, alignment pins or cover.
