Post subject:  Glow Plugs again.
#3 glow plug died again on me and its time for another replacement.

I'm looking for experiences with both the 7v GX3123 and new OEM 5v steel glow plugs. I need plugs that will fire up at -20 deg F without having to plug in meaning I want the same performance that my ceramics provided me. I plan on doing a lot of snowmobiling in Colorado this year and my Liberty is my tow vehicle. Although I carry a small portable generator with me in case of emergency to charge the car battery and plug the block heater, I prefer not to leave a generator running the entire time I'm sledding.

So, I'd appreciate everyone experiences with their replacement glow plugs. It was 9 deg F this morning and my engine would only run on 3 cylinders. For those curious as to why no. 3 has filed 3 times in 117k miles, I don't know. I don't have a coolant leak and my engine runs great. I figure its just bad luck as this is the more difficult of the 4 to replace. Wiring harness and controller were replaced last time to rule those out.

I have never gotten a check engine light with my glow plug "no starts". When I notice hard starting I check resistance and find the bad plug that way.

Another question: is the new glow plug control module much different than the old original one? I would like to replace it again but don't want to bother if it is specfically designedf or the 5v glow plugs.

No one w/ 5v OEM plugs can share how well they work in temps below freezing?

Mid to upper 20s fine so far. Suppose to get real cold in the next week.

-4 deg F this morning. Got it started after a couple of cycles with the glow plugs; ran on 3 cylinders until I bumped up the rpm and then it cleared right up.

Installed the 5v fast metallic glow plugs on January 22, 2011. I was living in Colorado Springs at that time while working on a project. Skied Breckenridge and overnight-ed in Summit area with the CRD parked outside. She started up each time with out any trouble and she was not plugged in. Kieth at GDE helped update the ECM to the lower voltage.


IME with failed glow plugs and not plugged in you just better go get a rental car! I think three of the glow plugs had failed while I was in CS.


Also had the jeep sitting for 6 hours in snowy weather as a buddy, GF and I tried (and failed) a winter approach to a 13ner that is S. of Pikes. However I don't think it got colder than 15 F. Which is too cold for me to try to climb something with snow shoes - you sweat & then freeze when you stop. The pictures were taken as we left.

And while your using the Snow Machine be careful. Wear a beacon and know how to use it....

I have not yet seen really cold temperatures, yet. The coldest start this year without the heater was -3F. I had a dealer install replacement glow plugs which I assume are the new 5v version. The -3 start was quick and easy. It is a little subjective, but the new glow plugs seem better than the original, even when new.

Thanks guys! Its 5v OEM plug plugs for me as soon as my credit card recovers from Christmas. Until then, I think I'll be running my 900 watt generator and plugging in my CRD while I'm out in the mountains.

11 degrees no issues with the 5v OEM plugs.

I think I am going to change mine out in the next few weeks. It needs to go in to get the fuel tank replaced under warranty, AGAIN. It is leaking from the vent on top of the tank, again, when filled to the top. I am going to have them replace the plugs and flash the ECU. I have the Mopar kit, and already put some C5-A anti-seize on them for whomever installs them...
