Hi i am thinking of changing coolant i know i need HOAT coolant like Zerex my question i how much i have read 1.6 gallons and some where it is 13.2 Quarts so what is the right amount? Now what kind and how much transmission fluid? Same for Diffrentials front and rear? I am planning a trip to malwart so any info soon will help thanks. |

You can get fluid types and capacities from the Owner's Manual (should be on the shelf in the top of the glove box) or the Factory Service Manual. If you don't have copies there is a link to PDF versions on Sir Sam's NOOB guide 1st post. IMHO it's likely that DCJ botched the metric to US measurement conversion the diesel coolant capacity, at least it's impossible for the litre figure to greater that the quart figure as litres are bigger than quarts. The diesel figure of 12.5L is consistent across manuals and in a few places (06 Owner's Manual for example) the US amount is almost correct so it's probable that the correct US coolant amount is 13.2 qts. Hence I've been going with 1.65 gallons of undiluted HOAT coolant to obtain a 50/50 coolant/water ratio. When doing a coolant change keep in mind that the lower radiator hose is below the radiator drain plug hence it's impossible to remove all 13.2 qts of old fluid from the system by a simple drain. If you want you can do several fill/drain cycles with straight demineralized water to dilute any fluid left in the system or you may be able to flush it all out using a Prestone Flush-n-fill kit. Whatever you do on refill be sure to add 1.6 of straight HOAT before completing the fill with demineralized water. FYI there is a post in the CRD Tech section about a DIY tool that makes opening the radiator drain a snap. I've found cracking the valve on the passenger side of the radiator after coolant has drained from the firewall tank significantly speeds up draining and I like to refill from that tank with the same valve open until fluid comes out of the valve, close it then and complete the fill, to purge as much air from the system as possible. |
