CRD Highway Mileage Check

Just did the thirt road trip to check MPG Saturday and the CRD averaged 30 mpg with half the rip at 70 mph and half at 60 mph with several (half doz or so) heavy throttle passes and run ups to 85 mph. In one section I was running at 58 mph with cruise control and OD on and it never unlocked or down shifted, at 50 on a couple of small short hills it didn't unlock or buck, but they were not much in length only about 50 yards. Last intoen tank was 23 mpg, so our CRD is humming right along just as smooth as glass.

While filling up before leaving a guy in a V6 gasser Liberty ask how I liked the CRD and commented he only gets 17 mpg highway and ask how the much the CRD got and he laughed when I told him 30 mpg and said too bad I had to pay 20 cents more per gallon. I also laughed and said it cost him about $4 to drive 30 miles while it only cost me $2.44 for same distance, and that he must not have done well in his math classes. The look on his face was priceless.

I get that all the time, I don't think people realize how much more Diesel would have to cost for me not to save money over a gasser. In my case its about 50%, I do a lot of combination driving but my average MPH is only about 35, so I would consider that in town driving. I think that there was 1 week last winter that I was just breaking even otherwise the CRD has been a winner hands down over the gassers, and then there's the TORQUE.......

Only way to top a diesel for fuel mileage is my electric, 80 cents to drive 40 miles (8 cents per kilowatt/hr). The kicker is you're ONLY going 40 miles, then wait 6 hours for it to recharge. And the grand for a new set of batteries every year sorta evens things out.

That's one reason I traded in the Dakota. Once gas went above $2/gallon, it's actually cheaper to pop for a set of batteries and drive electric than it was to drive the Dakota even if it was getting a full 18 MPG.

I dont see how everyone gets so good gasmileage. I have had my CRD for 700 miles now. Te first tank was completely in town and I got 20mpg, the second tank was mainly Highway, driving about 65, sometimes 70. I averaged only 24mpg? 50 miles were in town and about 340 Highway and I used 16 gallons of fuel. Is that normal?
Maybe its because mine is so new. My mom got the 06 gasser Liberty and we took it down to the beach too, at the same time, so we had a good comparison what the mpg difference was. She had an overall average of 20mpg!! This afternoon I am driving home, about 300 miles highway, cant wait to see what kind of mpg I am getting. Any ideas if my CRD is behaving normal?

There seems to be two different CRDs available - those that have no tranny issues and get good MPG and the other type is like mine, a tranny that bucks like crazy and 20.5 mpg average per tankful. I'm wondering how I can trade for the good unit!

Your mileage should improve as the engine gets broken in, this might take up to 5000 miles. Also don't underestimate 4 MPG more than a gasser, thats a 20% increase.

But how can I tell if my tranny is causing bad fuel economy? And how can I tell if my fuel economy is bad in general? Are my numbers OK, considering the low miles?
I'll update this tonight, I am about to go on a 350 miles trip back home.

Reggie I felt the bucking at times also and I think it's the fuel. Only done it last two tanks when running BP. Didn't noticed it with Hess so next tank I will fill with Hess and see if it goes away. Seem to only do it when not quite warmed up and 1800 RPM crusing then gone for the rest of the run.

There was a notice on the TDI forums by a member (who is qualified to make the report) that BP had notified them and other fleets that they had a bad batch of diesel and that they were advised to not use fuel and it would be picked up and replaced. I think this was limited to just the north east area of the country, but don't remember just where it all was concerning.

I'm starting to get disappointed in the CRD mileage lately too. I have not done better than 23 MPG and have a lifetime average of 20.0~. If I don't get 3-4+mpg in the summer I’m going to be pissed. I drive no less than 30 miles to work, all highway. With a 2.5" strait-thru magnaflow muffler on it too.

I tired turning the OD off for low speed runs but my consumption when up, I guess because I was revving it up more. I'll take the hit though because it is a BLAST to drive with the od off, as close to a SUV hot-rod as one can get I think.

Sorry you guys are having trouble, don't know what the problem is without out being there to see all the possibilities.

Hey you want a hotrod SUV go get a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 and see how 430hp fluff's up you skirt. 0>60 in 6.5 sec wet or dry. Never driven one, but I have driven an SRT8 magnum. Now let me tell you it is one hell of a rush.

Just got back from a 320 miles Highway trip. I was going 60-70 mph most of the time. My tank needle is in between 1/2 and 1/4 now and I guess my gas is going to last for another 100 miles, at the most. My Overall mileage is 1100. What y'all think? I'm getting a little concerned.

So what is your fuel mileage? When you fill up, divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons you bought. What you are saying in the above statement is just asking for a guess of mpg when there is a possibility of almost 10 gal to 14 gallons used for the 320 miles, that's about anywhere from 32 mpg down to 23 mpg or almost 10 mpg error posibility. So stop and do the math when you fill up, then tell us what you got for mileage.

I got 19.5 mpg pulling a 2,200 lb. flatbed on my last tank. Then once I added a 3,500 lb. 4x4 pickup truck to that the mileage dipped way down into the teens. You know what? That's still better than the 12 mpg my gasoline truck got running empty! :lol:

Sounds like some good MPG from most folks for hwy. use. My CTD took 30,000 miles to break in and the mileage just kept getting better the whole time.

I think 10-15k miles to break this CRD in seems minimun to see where the real MPG will settle out. I think what LibertyCRD is doing with a heavy load could be the best way to break these engines in..............work it, otherwise it probably just loafs through the gears around town.

Here's our mileage so far, after the tank were we got 21.26mpg I figured out that running the heater in the floor mode runs the AC all the time, so I bypassed it, the next tank got much better mileage without the AC running the whole time.

Filled up with bio for a round-trip from Denver to Crested Butte, Colorado this weekend. Couldn't believe it - average from door to door was 33.7mpg. Blew me away - the best I'd averaged to date was 30.1. Generally my highway mileage is 29 for bio, 25-27 for non-bio. I thought the trip computer was off, so I filled it up last night. Nope - it was spot-on accurate. GO JEEP!

Now my city mileage is a totally different story - lucky to hit 18. But this is mostly a highway and trail Jeep anyway.

PS: I started getting a huge bump in city and highway mileage when the engine reached 5000 miles. I think it broke in and broke in well. I have NO modifications on this motor.

I live just north of you in Lafayette, and I can tell you my 2005 Limited CRD is only getting 19-22 at best right now.

Does anyone know if the emissions setup for Pennsylvania would have anything to do with it? I moved to Colorado and my truck seems to be falling apart. Used to average 24-28 without a problem - with the winterized diesel fuel.
