This is a noise that I am getting. It seems to be from the rear, in addition to the high pitch clank, I am getting a low end clunk sound. It sounds like something is broken, I just cannot find it.

i try to fix the noise i have since weeks now.
Noise is a distinct clonk-clonk at deceleration, constant and acceleration.
This is getting so big that now there are vibrations (clonk-clonk) in the steering wheel and the floor panel .....
It is proportional to speed.
I have replaced:
-Wheels hubs (by Crowns)
-2x Front CV axle (with a cheap brand from the east)

Next steps: (to be done hopefully tonight)
-front disks to be replaced
-switch front / rear wheels

Question:
-Should I replace the front shaft ?( i have a new one in my garage )
-should I replace the 2x front CV axles with some good brand (JBAl)

Thanks !

The front driveshaft (between transfer case and differential gears) that has a CV-style joint at each end is known to fail at the rear much faster. You can see it easily if you look under the vehicle for a ring of black grease under the body up and around the spinning joint. Also, if it's gone, you will be able to see past the rubber "boot" into the bearings and grease.

You can also simply put the jeep in 2-wheel-drive and take the drive shaft out (20 minutes, an 8mm socket and some penetrating oil is all you need). That will tell you if it's part of the problem or not with little cost.

If you haven't looked at the ball joint on top of the rear end I would start there. Once that fails it will damage the u joint closest to rear end due to excess twisting of the rear axle during acceleration and braking.

That's it, I rotate front and rear wheel, and put new brake rotor at the front.
I still have to make a drive test to see if the noise is gone / diminished.

But while doing the job I checked the front cv axles.
The driver side is one is tight but the passenger side one is really clumsy, it is not securely held and has some free slack
I have made a short vid of it.
Can u tell if it it's gone ?

SOLVED !!!!

I rotated the tires (front <---> back, same side) and replaced my front brake rotors..... silence !
I do believe that my front CV axles were gone, so the replacement I did a few weeks ago was needed but really the main problem were the tires and the rotors... Easy Fix... I will remember this !!

Had the clunk clunk going on, it ended up being the top bolt on the motor mount came loose.

So my jeep is making a noise.
I can only hear it when the windows are rolled down and a wall or passing car reflects the sound back to me.
I'm pretty sure its on the drivers side.

It sounds like someone is lightly jingling their keys. (best way I can describe it)

What do you think? Front driveshaft CV joint?

I crawled underneath to check the shaft. Shaft seems tight with only a small amount of play.
But when inspecting the boot on the front driveshaft CV joint...

... I found NO BOOT. :banghead:

Yup, there's your issue.

$45 + shipping

And pretty easy.

After towing my buddies 5000lb mastercraft wakeboat this weekend, which i did in Full-Time 4WD, I am getting a high-pitched whining(if you can imagine that, its like a constant hum, not a clunk or anything) noise when I make slow, hard right turns. When I say hard, I mean full-lock or close too it. It happens in 4wd and 2wd and it hasnt seemed to effect anything like gas mileage during normal driving. Any ideas?

Sounds like power steering.
Maybe low fluid?

Sounds funny, but would be possible to have low fluid in the front diff?

I recently bought my 05 CRD Liberty Limited with 94xxx miles. The tires look to be nearly new all season. I have a noise level that sounds like aggressive tread noise. Took it in to local stealer for the free trailer hitch and check the reason for the noise. Other than a $50 charge, they said there was evidence of rear axle seal leakage and they suspected dry differential but found it low and found metal particles using a magnet. They did not top off the level so I am going to take it to a local garage to have fluids changed out. As a kid, all I had was clunkers but they all showed some metal particles on the drain plug magnet. Should I be worried about the metal particles in diffs?
BTW I dont see any evidence of seal leakage. I dont know what they saw

They saw dollar signs. :ROTFL:

I would not worry about a few flakes of metal, I have yet to see a magnetic plug that was clean.

Just change the fluids and drive it till it breaks.

This noise from my front end escaped '4' separate shops! The Mazda dealer I bought it from, '2' jeep dealers & 1 regular shop. The 'klunk' was coming from 3 separate places. The front passenger control arm, a mis-placed fender from a prior accident, & both motor mounts.

2005 CRD 4x4 Sport. I have a clunking noise that feels like it comes from the rear. I only hear it after I shut down! It is a dull clunk, clunk, clunk, like something is rotating after shutdown??? Asked mechanic to check u-joints. Said, "looks OK."

New tires, balance etc.. Been going on long before this.

Muffler hitting the frame? Or rotation could be loose torque converter bolts?
