I have an 06 liberty that I drive some what aggressively on back roads. When im going 70ish up the Allegheny front I get a noise like a rumble strip at 50mph but only from the back when the car shifts to overdrive wile past halve throttle.

I've got a mild grinding sound that showed up right away after having my brakes greased and alignment done, thought it was tire noise at first, but after putting on my summer tires that I know are quiet it's still there, from this thread sounds like it might be bearing but the wheels all feel solid, no play in any direction. The whine shows up under light acceleration, seems to be coming from the front end, and gets louder and louder with speed.

Second noise is what sounds like a failing power steering pump coming from the back end, thought it was my diff but the fluid looks fine to me... Would this indicate that the LSD needs work maybe? Jeeps at 185000 kms (about 115000 miles)

PS, Alightment was done because the inter tire rod end was replaced, also don't see anything amiss under the front end on a simple glance.

Just wanted to add my experience. '06 CRD with 169K on it. Wump, wump starting at 20MPH, at 55, could not hear the motor so loud inside. My son told me a wheel hub. I checked them out by just raising the vehicle and rotating the tires. The driver side felt like it was binding. So I bought 2 new hubs, one for each side. Did the driver side today. Took it out for a road test and WOW, I killed the Wumper. :o) Next weekend the other side. I also found a pin in the brake caliper bracket that was frozen. I notice the new pads I put in were wearing on the inside the most. So took care of the pin as well. I did have to use heat to remove the 3 hub bolts. And mine were the inverted 6 point star bolts. :? Used grease on the splines. Checked the CV boots and they were OK!

As an update to this one, the noise sounds like a bearing going bad, and when I turn right the sound nearly disapears (load comes off the driver's tire) so going off advice from people I trusted I figured it was the driver's side wheel bearing! It wasn't. Brand new bearing installed, absolutely no difference... Any ideas?

Noise coming from the back is still a complete mystery to everyone I talk to

2006 crd liberty. When I put my car in to park or neutral the engine purs. No engine rattle nothing. When I put it in drive it starts rattling like an old tractor. Is this normal for a crd (sorry first diesel I have ever owned).

Something is loose or worn out causing the rattle.
In some cases its the motor mounts.
In my case it was a broken transmission dipstick tube.

Check tensioner pulley on serpentine belt, they get weak with age and allow the belt to pulsate or bounce more when engine is in gear and make a rattling noise. Observe tensioner pulley at idle with engine in gear while someone holds brakes for safety. If it is bouncing up and down enough to make noise, it needs replacing. Note: Bad alternator pulley can also cause the tensioner pulley to bounce a idle. The alternator pulley is a one way override clutch and if it freezes up it will make the belt bounce real bad at idle....
Look for any signs of red dust behind center cap of alternator pulley...a sign of bad pulley...

I had a similar story, ended up being the opposite side. I ended up swapping both sides before it was fixed. If it has significant sound, and it's a wheel bearing, you should be able to feel it but putting it on a jack and removing the tire. Then spin it and it will probably feel a little rough. I couldn't feel mine with the tire on, but with it removed I could feel that the bearing wasn't smooth like it should be. Compare the two sides for smoothness :2cents:

As for the rear noise. First I'd feel the wheel bearings with tires off just like the front. Next
I'd remove the cover and inspect the spider gears, and everything else. I've seen big chips out of the spiders, and heard of others that were the same. Might catch it before it fails catastrophically, which could be dangerous at higher speeds.

Checked everything and still no luck. All I can see is when it goes in to R or D the engine tilts a little.

Stupid question as I have purchased mine second hand and dont really know how they sound (first diesel as well) after 60k miles...here is a clip on YouTube (https://youtu.be/iv1hwtgkHxM). As you can hear there is a big difference from P to R to N to D back in to N. Any thoughts or is it all good??

Everything looks normal in your video.

Thanks Flash...I just read that you can see if you can test to srr if you have possible rocker issies by reading what the AFM results are. I live 1000ft above sea level if that's important.

Anyone have a how to and data to compare too??

I really appreciate everyone's help via PMs and replies...this site is EPIC

Edit: plugged in MAF sensor and just went for a cruise to warm up the car and took a snapshot of the below. I assume the MAF is really low. Another member told me 19 was factory. Mine sits around 12.5 at idle. Please not that all results are in degrees celcius :) also with the MAF plugged back in, rattle was worse and car ran like a pig. Car is stock expect for a provent 200.

This is one of the reasons why I can really appreciate this group. I had the dreaded whomp whomp whomp sound that gradually got worse. I wasn't sure on which side I replaced years ago, so I go on here and read that I replaced the drivers side hub. Woo hoo I guess it's time to replace the passenger side. Jeeps all quiet agan, thank lost jeeps!! it's time for some :5SHOTS:

After I lifted my 2006 Jeep Cherokee KJ Diesel (4.5cm in front 5.5cm at rear).
I started getting some vibration under heavy acceleration at around 80km/h.
Vibration is only on heavy acceleration and not on deceleration. Soon as I let off the acceleration the vibration goes away. If I accelerate gently the vibration doesn't occur.

I have already ordered the rear Ujoints (Moog greasable), but a few weeks away.

Checked front CV by driving in circles and listening to a clicking sound, but I didn't hear anything.

I heard some have had to drop the transfere case a bit to fix the angle of the driveshaft after a lift.
I took the Jeep to a driveline specialist, and they advised me I should give the springs to settle for a few month (suspension done 3 weeks ago).
They said they could try and put in longer shaft, but wasn't guaranteed to fix the issue and would cost around $400.

I also recently serviced (Auto Tranny fluid change and filters) the Auto tranny, and used 2 x Dr SHudder Fix, as well as the Transgo kit.
I don't think it's the tranny shuddering as the issue was not there before the lift.

Anyone else had driveline vibration after a minor lift (heavy duty spring) ?
Is there any diagnostic I can do myself at home to try and find the cause ?
Could it be worn rear lower control arm bushing and under heavy acceleration it allows too much movement ?

ps.
My money is on the Ujoint, as I am experiencing the exact same issue as below (it's on a TJ though)

My 05 Libby crd had a metallic grinding noise that would appear after driving at highway speeds. I removed the front driveshaft and noise stopped I suspect a bad U joint.

Hi, I own a 2005 Liberty KJ CRD sport, recently developed a humming noise, more like a wheel bearing noise, but only happens between 45mph and 60mph, after or before the noise disappear, took it to my mechanic, he put it on a lift but we couldn't replicate the noise when the truck was on the air, he suggested a trans shop, went there and they tell me torque converter noise, also I hooked a scanner and drive it and trans oil temp reach dangerous numbers, in light traffic goes around 210F and in heavy stop and go reached 235F all numbers are too high IMHO, I'm wondering if someone else experienced this issue?, I read many topics with converter problems, but most of them have had shudder when tcc applied, my jeep shift pretty smooth and tcc apply correctly, is only the noise and temp what worries me. Thank You.

Post subject:  Re: The CRD drive line noise thread

I suspect that the humming noise at those speeds is your front tires. You may be in need of an alignment which is causing the tires to not wear properly and causing the noise.

I had a similar issue. Humming noise between 40-55 mph. I rotated the tires rear to front. Noise was significantly reduced. I then had an alignment done.

Your trans temp doesn't seem too high. But it has been very hot lately.
The trans cooler is part of the bottom half of the AC condenser. Make sure it's clean and not full of dirt. Also make sure both your cooling fans are working properly.
You can add an additional trans cooler if you want. Many here have done that.

Hi, thank you!. I suspected tires, I will have them checked out. I'm impressed with the trans temps, I always had VW diesels and they usually reach 200F which I considered already high compared to other brands, but this one reaching 234-238F without towing seemed really hot to me. Could be possible having drag on the front or rear due to alignment could cause the trans to work harder and get too hot?.

My turn.

My jeep crd makes a loud howling (?) noise on deceleration ONLY. When I accelerate, the noise instantly goes away.

Seems to be coming from the mid to back of vehicle. Suspect low rear diff fluid, will check tomorrow

Thoughts?

Mine just started making a similar noise only from the transmission. When I got home it would not move in reverse. Previously for the past few weeks it would not move in reverse unless you went to park first.

I think one of the local auto places finished off the transmission. I took it there to have it looked at because it was pulling to the right. Told him about the issue of it not moving in reverse unless you went to park first. So naTURALLY HE put it in reveres and revved it many times to see if I was lying or not

Post subject:  Re: The CRD drive line noise thread

I have a strange noise that occurs only when making a hard left turn at low to medium speeds. It is a consistent womp womp womp noise, but you can distinctly hear what sounds like roller bearings or interfering gears. I have replaced all four wheel bearings front and rear and the vehicle in general is quieter but this noise is still there and seems to be slowly getting worse. I am 75% sure the noise is coming from the front driver side. I have read a lot about the CV's and intermediate shafts going bad, so I tore the driver side apart today. Everything came apart like a dream, nothing seized, nothing jammed. I was able to pull the entire CV out by hand with a firm but gentle "pop" motion. Both ends move very freely and the boots are in great condition, no leaks, tears or wear. Is it possible that the splines are making that much noise with everything in such good condition?

I still have to take the passenger side apart to confirm that it is ok, but the boots look identical to the driver side so I am not confident that I'm going to find anything wrong.

Also, I get an occasional pop or clunk when turning hard at low speeds, which also seems to point to bad CV's...but I have no proof that either of them are bad at this point. What should I look at next (after the passenger side CV)? I really hate taking this thing to a shop and paying thousands for repairs that don't need to be done because he mechanic "thought" they knew what the problem was.
