Well, we got our first check engine light today. 3500 miles and about a month and a half of ownership. I was hoping the 2006's would have most of this stuff worked out..

The strange thing is I cannot pull the codes at all. I did the on-off-on-off-on procedure and I dont get anything, All of my other dodge vehicles would display the info just fine, Wondering why the jeep doesn't do it?

The other strange things is now that the check engine light is on the cruise control wont function. I wouldn't think that a bad cruise control would trip the CEL, but who knows...

Yeah my 95 Grand Cherokee did that too. Everytime the CEL was on you werent able to use cruise control.

Ah, ok, probably some sort of saftey thing, who knows...

Its still odd that I cannot check my own codes tho. Wonder if thats a 2006 thing?

I have trouble with the key trick for checking codes on mine. You most likely do have a code you just can't pull it up.

And when you do get it to work the last 2 numbers of the code may be transposed.

I never even get a "done" or anything, it just keeps displaying the mileage like it didnt even check anything...

Just go to advanced auto parts. They have a OBD2 scanner and read your codes for free.

Don't think i have one of those around here :)

I should be able to do it myself, lol...

Either way, it goes back to the dealer and they deal with it...

Update....

You can't check your own codes on 2006 models. Chrysler has a new scan tool for 2006 to retreive the codes..

Bummer :(

It's probably the brake light switch P0504 Brake switch – A/B correlation. Took out my cruise when it tripped the code on my Jeep. I have an Actron PocketScan that reads my 2006. Bought it when the Jeep had 54 miles on it because that's how far down the road I got before my first CEL.

Don't clear the code. The dealer won't fix anything unless the CEL is on. Learned that one the hard way.

Too late, the code went away 150 miles later on it own, lol. Oh well, it probably wasnt anything serious? :)

Side note: on that tank of gas where the CEL was on we got 26mpg (458 miles to the tank), we had been averaging 24mpg. weird...

The code should still be stored in the computer. When my Jeep tripped the code, I cleared it and it stayed off for a few weeks before coming on again. The switch that is involved is faulty and many have the same problem.

Ah, ok. Come to think of it, I have a OBDII interface that connects to a laptop that I used for my 2004 Neon, I bet that will read the codes.... I'll plug it in this weekend and see what code is stored...

I assume the 2006's are still OBDII compliant?

 i had the same cel deal and the dealer couldnt find any codes, they finally concluded that it was caused by the tranny any way got a new torgue converter pump and cooler out of the deal, also all current tsb's no problems since and my fuel mileage went way up almost 3 mpg on average, one of those tsb locks the torque converter at a lower rpm. really reduced the dreaded shudder

My KJ has 11,300 miles on it, and the CEL came on yesterday. This is actually the second time the light has come on, the first one cleared itself the same day. My manufacture date is 7-11-05. The on-off-on-off-on key thing gives me nothing but an odometer reading... Ant thoughts?

The only problems I have ever noticed to date:
1) When I pass a vehicle then decelerate back to cruise speed, I get the transmission shudder
2) Sometimes at around 55 mph, I get a slight transmission shudder
3) Not so much a problem rather than a comment, but average highway economy lately is 25 mpg

MY CEL came on my 2005 CRD at 16k ...
I was hoping to figure it out without having to go the the dealership....

I can't get anything out of the on -off -on off -on combo.... it just gives the the odometer too...

Apparently this feature was removed around 2005 or so :(
