I have meticulously kept up with maintenance, and am at 106k. After sitting for about 6 days, the libby will not start!

THE STORY;
- Two weeks ago I was driving home from the middle of nowhere, when the engine had a loss of power and extreme shakiness. There were no codes. I limped to the next town (6 miles), unable to raise RPM past 1800 or so, even in neutral. When pulling over the shaky engine felt like it was going to tear its self apart. I shut her down, let it sit for 45 seconds, prayed, and re-started. Everything was restored and I made it home safe and sound.
- Last week I pulled over to watch a red fox frolicking in a field when the engine simply died. No codes. Restarted and all was fine.
- Today, started the car to get her warmed up. Started right up, ran for about 10 seconds, then died and will not restart. No Codes.

WTF??!?!?! I'm no car-wiz but to the best of my knowledge not all cylinders were firing (duh), which to me points to two things; fuel, or plugs. My best guess is injectors, but really I have no idea. Anyone else?

No codes as in hooking up an OBDII reader and there is nothing, or the CEL is not on? Is your CEL working?

Actually just no CEL. Is it possible to have codes without the cel coming on? I'll hook up the reader and get back to yall with any codes.

Checked, no codes. I'll try the second key tomorrow. Any other ideas?

No codes, and if the key dose not work? Sounds like a fuel problem?

1. Dirty fuel filter?
2. Air in fuel?
2. Do you have a 2nd gen fuel housing?

I would try to detach the battery cable to allow the computer to reset and while the cables to the battery are disconnected, put it on a battery charger and charge it on the low setting until it is fully charged.

Do not charge the battery while it is still connected to the CRD, a charge is performed with the cables detached.

A low battery does weird things, I would have it checked anyway just to rule out that variable.

While you're checking things under the hood, it is easy to see if you have a 2nd gen. fuel head or not.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62441

That gave me very similar sounding problems some years back.

running problems with no codes - tends to be a fuel issue

although they will act all kinds of flakey with a low battery - basically you have to have enough voltage to turn on the computer before it will start

having enough current to turn the starter - is not the same thing.

Get another person and have them spray ether in air intake and try starting it have them keep spraying it to bleed air out...I had to do this after new filter took almost a whole can to.bleed air out...

x2 on disconnecting the battery and charging it if you have a charger. I'm pretty sure places auto place like NAPA will check your battery for you and may even charge it for free if you don't have a charger.

On that note, what condition is your battery in?

Good luck, be safe, and keep up informed. If you do get her up and running, be EXTREMELY careful when you're driving her and be prepared to get over on the shoulder if an emergency situation breaks out again.

Do not spray ether in the intake. You could end up with mushrooms for glow plugs and cause an explosion.

Thanks guys! I have the original fuel heater/filter housing despite all the warnings and problems others have had with them. I agree it sounds like a fuel problem, as my battery is almost new and cranks just fine. Does anyone have a part number for the new filter housing? I'll try the procedure to bleed air out of the fuel line tomorrow and see how it goes. So not the injectors eh? I just jumped to that conclusion because I'm afraid, and those cost the most money...

New fuel housing P/N 68043089AA & addapter plug P/N 68043086AB.

The new fuel housing made all my limp mode and stalling issues go away.

Good luck.

Wow, I can't even bleed the filter head. I can depress the primer pump as many times as I want with no result, no pressure buildup, and when I let off the bleeder valve, nothing happens... I even watched a video to make sure I was doing it right; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPwGcWi3gE0
Could this be a clogged filter? Broken fuel line? I think I'm going to order all the parts for a new filter head, new filter, and plugs/wiring pieces and get it done with...

Is there a thread in the tech section that gives instruction on replacing the filter head to gen2? Cant find it...

DO NOT USE ETHER/STARTING FLUID! Do a search on some of my other posts on the subject. The results are not pretty. Sometimes the damage does not show up right away either, i.e. cracked rings, etc. Using ether in a CRD is a bad idea. I have seen older VW engines with severe damage from ether.

I don't think you'll need one. Take off two nuts to get it off the firewall. Cut off old connector (there's only two, it's the one on the right). If you have a heat gun slide some shrink wrap over the wires before you attach the new connector. Solder new connector to the wires. Replace hoses and rebolt to firewall.

It comes with a new fuel filter in place. Bleed the air. That should do it. I think the bleeding the lines is covered in the newb guide under fuel filter replacement.

Some of us have Facet lift pumps mounted under hood. It bleeds the air quickly. There are several lift pump options and they all have their adherents.

good luck

SHE LIVES!!! Thanks to everyone who contributed useful information! It was the stupid old fuel filter head, just like yall thought. Sadly I couldn't wait for the parts to arrive and just had the stealership do it. What's another $425 in this car anyway? Seriously, this forum has proven invaluable to me as a CRD owner. I would be lost without it!
