Hello all,
I Just purchased my 06 crd with 75,000 miles. I wanted a small diesel and out of all the alternatives: Land rover defender diesel, Toyota land cruiser diesel, Unimog 406 diesel the jeep was the most cost effective choice.

The question:
I have poured through at least 20 pages on the tech section and endless TB change stories. Why is there not a age limit on the timing belt? Oil changes have 6500 miles or 6 months etc. The only finite thing i found was a mention of 6 years in one post.

I am assuming my belt is OEM unchanged. I plan to change the belt soon along with the idlers and tensioner pulley. How soon should it do it? I plan to tow a small boat with her but not for a few more months. I am curious of what you guys think...

How soon kind of depends on what your annual driving mileage is. Jeep says 100,000 miles; Gates says 6 years or the mileage recommended by Jeep. I'm retired and don't drive lots of miles annually so IMHO go with 6 yrs or 100,000 miles whichever is first which in my case is like 48,000 miles in which case I'm unlikely to worry about idlers, tensioner and WP as long as they are solid. So at 75,000 if you drive a lot and will get close to 100,000 in 12 months or so change it then but if it's going to take several years to get to 100,000 change it soonish.

Like yours mine is at 75K miles and approaching 7 years. I plan on changing it within the next 5K. I think you would be wise to do similar based on age more than mileage.

Did mine at 90k (7 yrs) and was glad that I did; it was cracked. Might have made it to 100k but I am glad I did it earlier.

I guess its time to start collecting parts, being that it is relatively new and the temp gauge reads correctly I plan to just change the belt tensioner and pulleys. Unless the water pump really has some bearing slop to it.?.?.?

The water pump is an area of preference, many state you should replace it, Mine was fine at 120k when I did the timing belt ( I know very late) so i chose to wait till 200k before I tackle the pump. Changing the pump makes the job slightly more difficult and you must have the VM.1085 tool or equivalent to hold the cam gears to remove them, where as with just a timing belt tensioner ect you can get by homemade pins (I did) but now having the correct tools the job is so much easier. Just my 2 cents.
